What can an agent do with Chargebee through MCP?

Through the Data Lookup server an agent can read customers, subscriptions, invoices, credit notes and transactions. The Onboarding server builds catalogs and demo data on test sites.

Where it runs

Chargebee runs four kinds of server.

ServerWhat it doesHow writes behave
Data LookupReads billing records across more than 20 switchable toolsets. Its 14 export tools start export jobs on your site.
OnboardingIts listed tools create customers (optionally with a payment source), product families, items, item prices, features and quotes; manage entitlements (create, update or remove); update branding; and import invoices, credit notes, subscriptions and unbilled charges.Writes directly, with no draft stage documented. Chargebee says Onboarding is not available on live sites.
CustomCombines tools you pick.Not documented.

Good to know

  • Onboarding's toolset descriptions also mention updating and deleting customers and catalog records, and converting quotes, without listing a matching tool.
  • No documented tool collects payments or issues refunds.
  • Chargebee doesn't publish the Custom tool catalog, so check each toolset before enabling it.

Can

  • Look up customers, subscriptions, entitlements, quotes and orders (Data Lookup)
  • Read invoices, credit notes, transactions and payment intents, with PDF links (Data Lookup)
  • Pull MRR history one subscription at a time, by subscription ID, and historical exchange rates (Data Lookup server)
  • Start export jobs and fetch the ZIP (Data Lookup)
  • Create customers (optionally with a payment source), catalog items, prices, features and quotes, manage entitlements and import invoices and subscriptions; toolset descriptions also mention update and delete (Onboarding, test sites)
  • Answer how-to questions and generate API code (Knowledge Base)

Cannot

  • Run the Onboarding server on a live site (per Chargebee)
  • Use OAuth on sites with Multi-Business Entity enabled (per Chargebee)
  • Create a Custom server on the Legacy Product Catalog (per Chargebee)
  • Exceed the signed-in user's Chargebee access when connected by OAuth (per Chargebee)

What access does it get?

An API key reaches every tool enabled on that server; OAuth narrows that to the signed-in user's Chargebee access. Chargebee publishes no OAuth scope names.

How do I connect it?

Turn on MCP Access for a server in Chargebee, then add the Claude connector, a regional ChatGPT app, or your site's server URL in any MCP client.

  1. In Chargebee Billing go to Settings › Configure Chargebee › Agentic AI › MCP Servers, select the server, turn on MCP Access and switch off toolsets you don't need.
  2. Open https://claude.com/connectors/chargebee, click Add to Claude, choose your data center's URL (US https://mcp.chargebee.com/, Europe https://mcp.eu.chargebee.com/, Australia https://mcp.au.chargebee.com/) and sign in to Chargebee.
  3. Chargebee doesn't document which server settings the directory connector uses. After connecting, check its tool list in Claude and switch off any tools you don't want, including the generate and import tools.
  4. For one specific server, use Customize › Connectors › Add custom connector with that server's URL.

Team/Enterprise: an Owner must add the connector before members can connect.

What should a finance team watch for?

Chargebee makes you responsible for anything an MCP client does through its servers. It also says approval behaviour depends on the client, so keep confirmations on.

  • Onboarding tools write straight to the site, with no draft step documented. Chargebee limits them to test and sandbox sites.
  • The Claude listing shows 10 generate, import and branding tools (including import_customers_tool, import_subscriptions_tool, import_quotes_tool, import_product_catalog_tool and generate_customers_and_subscriptions_tool) beside 35 lookup tools, while Chargebee's docs say connectors reach Knowledge Base and Data Lookup only. Chargebee documents the test-and-sandbox-only rule for the Onboarding server alone. Its docs don't apply that rule to these connector tools. Until Chargebee confirms otherwise, assume the connector can create records on the connected site. Turn those 10 tools off in Claude or keep per-call approval on, especially on a live site.
  • An API key opens every enabled tool. Prefer OAuth where the site allows it (Multi-Business Entity sites don't). Rotate keys and keep them in your client's secret storage, out of shared config files.
  • Payment Source Lookup returns stored payment sources with gateway details and can list gateway-side payment method tokens. Export Data builds ZIP exports of customers, subscriptions, invoices, transactions and more. Chargebee advises enabling only the toolsets you need, so turn these off unless required.
  • Comments and invoice notes are free text. With write tools on, an injected instruction could push the agent to create, change or delete records, so keep a person approving each call.
  • Chargebee's MCP pages make no data-retention or training statement; read Chargebee's privacy policy and your AI provider's terms.
  • Connect with OAuth where you can, so each person, including an outside accountant, reaches only what their own Chargebee login allows (not possible on Multi-Business Entity sites).

How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?

Data Lookup suits billing questions and reporting. Write tools belong on test sites, for catalog and import work a person checks before anything goes live.

Inside a company

  • Ask which invoices are unpaid or which subscriptions renew this month, without building a report.
  • Pull MRR history for specific subscriptions, one call per subscription ID, to explain their movement (Data Lookup server; the Claude connector lists no MRR tool).
  • Run an invoice export and have the agent summarise it for the revenue reconciliation.
  • On a sandbox site, draft a new pricing catalog and test subscriptions for the team to review.

At an accounting firm

  • Before month-end, list a client's failed payments and open invoices for the controller to chase.
  • Compare Chargebee invoice export totals by period with ledger figures you supply or pull through a separate accounting connector; the Chargebee servers don't read the ledger.
  • Check contract terms, ramps and discounts on a subscription during a revenue recognition review.
  • Pull a client's credit notes and refund transactions for the period to support a revenue cut-off review.

Whatever the use, keep a person approving anything that changes Chargebee or your ledger, and treat agent figures as drafts until they tie to Chargebee's reports.

FAQ

Is this official?

Yes. Chargebee hosts the servers and documents them in its Billing docs. The Claude connector is made by Chargebee Inc and marked Anthropic verified.

Is it free?

Chargebee doesn't document a separate charge or plan requirement for MCP; Custom servers need the Latest Product Catalog.

Does it change data in Chargebee?

Data Lookup reads and creates export jobs. Onboarding creates, updates and deletes records on test and sandbox sites only. Custom servers do whatever their chosen tools do.

Is my data used to train models?

Chargebee's MCP docs do not say. Check Chargebee's privacy policy and your AI provider's terms on training and retention before connecting.

Can my accountant use it on my behalf?

Chargebee doesn't address this directly. With OAuth, the connection follows the signed-in user's Chargebee access, so an accountant needs their own Chargebee login to your site.
