What can an agent do with ClickUp through MCP?

It can search a Workspace, read and change tasks, log time, edit Docs and post Chat messages through 48 tools, per ClickUp.

ClickUp groups the tools into search, tasks (including bulk edits and Custom Fields), file attachments, comments, tags, links and dependencies, List moves, time tracking, Lists and Folders, members, Chat, Docs and time in status.

How writes behave

  • Writes take effect at once. ClickUp describes no draft or approval step.
  • ClickUp says only that the assistant may confirm before deleting a task.
  • Send Chat Message posts to a channel, and comments can @mention people.

Good to know

  • No tool moves money.
  • The Claude directory listing shows 35 tools, so a client's loaded set can differ.

Can

  • Search tasks, Docs and other Workspace content; filter tasks by type or tag
  • Create, update and bulk-edit tasks, including Custom Fields, tags, links and dependencies
  • Attach files to tasks; move a task to a new List or add it to a second List
  • Remove tags, task links and dependencies from tasks
  • Delete a single task or subtask (the only delete tool; ClickUp's blog calls it the only destructive one)
  • Read and add task comments and threaded replies
  • Start, stop and add time entries; read time entries and time in status
  • Create and update Lists, Folders, Docs and Doc pages
  • Read Chat channels and send Chat messages

Cannot

  • Delete Lists, Folders, Docs or comments (per ClickUp)
  • Search connected apps (Connected or Enterprise Search) through MCP (per ClickUp)
  • Run Automations or act on a schedule; MCP is request and response only (per ClickUp)
  • Accept a personal API key or token in place of OAuth (per ClickUp)

What access does it get?

The same access as the ClickUp user who signs in, limited to the Workspaces they select; ClickUp publishes no OAuth scope names.

WhereScopes and permissions (as documented)Admin requirement
ClickUp MCP server (remote, all clients)Not documented by the vendor. OAuth 2.1 + PKCE browser sign-in; you select the Workspaces, and access follows that account's ClickUp permissions. Each extra Workspace needs its own authorization, per ClickUp.ClickUp says no Workspace admin is needed to enable MCP before a user connects, and it documents no Workspace-level switch to turn MCP off. Each user revokes access from their ClickUp account settings, per ClickUp.
Claude connector (directory)Not documented by the vendor; same OAuth sign-in and server URL as above.Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds the connector before members connect.
ChatGPT appNot documented by the vendor. Sign-in lets you choose which Workspaces to share; reconnect to change them.ChatGPT Team, Enterprise and Edu: only owners and admins can configure MCP servers, per ClickUp.

How do I connect it?

Add https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp in your client, sign in to ClickUp and pick your Workspaces; test with a read-only prompt first.

  1. Team/Enterprise: an Owner first adds the connector in organization settings; members then connect from their own Connectors list.
  2. Open claude.com/connectors/clickup and connect, or go to Settings › Connectors › Add, name it ClickUp and enter https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp (ClickUp's steps for Pro, Team and Enterprise).
  3. Sign in to ClickUp in the browser window and select the Workspaces to share.
  4. Test with a read-only prompt, such as listing your Spaces, before asking for changes.
  5. Claude Free: ClickUp documents the mcp-remote bridge below in claude_desktop_config.json, then a restart. See the cautions on this bridge before you use it.

What should a finance team watch for?

Low daily call caps on smaller plans, writes that take effect at once, and free text in tasks and comments that the agent reads.

  • Without the Everything AI add-on, calls are capped per Workspace and per client over a rolling 24 hours, per ClickUp: 100 on Free Forever, 300 on Core/Unlimited, 1,000 on Business, 2,500 on Business Plus, 5,000 on Enterprise and 25,000 on Enterprise Plus. The window starts with your first request, each tool call counts, and caps cannot be reset.
  • A blocked call returns RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED. At 100 calls a day, one close-status review that walks many tasks could use up the Free Forever cap.
  • With the add-on, MCP shares the public API's per-minute limits (100 to 10,000 requests per minute per token by plan). ClickUp says limits may change and a fair use policy applies.
  • Creates, updates, bulk edits, file attachments, removals, Chat messages and Delete task act immediately. Keep your client's per-call approval on.
  • ClickUp's overview says there are no deletion tools, but its tool reference lists Delete task; assume deletion is possible.
  • IT can't gate MCP inside ClickUp: ClickUp says no Workspace admin approval is needed and documents no Workspace-level off switch. Control it in your AI client's admin settings instead.
  • Task descriptions, comments, Docs and Chat are untrusted input: an injected instruction could push the agent to edit, delete or message. Don't approve calls you didn't ask for.
  • Least privilege: connect only the Workspaces you need, and give each staff member their own ClickUp sign-in so changes carry their own permissions. ClickUp documents no way to switch off write tools.
  • The Claude Free bridge runs npx -y mcp-remote, which fetches a third-party npm package at launch without a pinned version. mcp-remote's README says it stores credentials in ~/.mcp-auth on that machine. Don't share or commit the config, and pin a version if your policy requires it. ClickUp's setup for other clients uses the same command.
  • ClickUp's MCP docs don't describe data handling. ClickUp's AI terms cover ClickUp AI features. Data an agent reads over MCP goes to your AI client, so check Anthropic's or OpenAI's terms as well.

How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?

Reads suit status questions and time reporting across close and client work; writes suit task and Doc drafting that a person checks before it goes out.

Inside a company

  • Ask which month-end close tasks are overdue, who owns them and how long each has sat in its current status.
  • Summarise comments on an audit-request or budget task before a review.
  • Draft close tasks from last month's checklist for a person to review before the agent creates them.
  • Draft a close status update as a Doc page for a person to edit.

At an accounting firm

  • Pull a client's time entries to check hours against the engagement before billing.
  • List client tasks waiting on documents and draft follow-up comments for a manager to approve.
  • Report time in status across a List to spot client work that is stuck in review.
  • Summarise open review-note comments across a client's engagement List for a manager.

Keep a person approving anything that changes ClickUp or another system of record. Treat AI summaries of time and status as drafts until someone checks them.

FAQ

Is this official?

Yes. ClickUp hosts the server and documents it on its developer site; the Claude directory lists it as Anthropic verified. Community GitHub servers are separate projects.

Is it free?

ClickUp says the MCP server is available on all plans, including Free Forever, and does not use AI credits. Daily call caps rise with the plan; the paid Everything AI add-on lifts them to API limits.

Does it change data in ClickUp?

Yes. Acting as the signed-in user, it can create and update tasks, Lists, Folders, Docs, comments and time entries, attach files, remove tags, links and dependencies, send Chat messages and delete single tasks. Changes take effect immediately.

Is my data used to train models?

ClickUp's MCP docs don't say. ClickUp's AI terms cover ClickUp AI features and say using them grants ClickUp no extra rights to your data. Data an agent reads over MCP goes to your AI client, so check Anthropic's or OpenAI's terms too.

Can my accountant use it on my behalf?

ClickUp doesn't document delegation. An accountant who is already a member of your Workspace connects with their own login and gets only their own permissions.
