What can an agent do with Coupa through MCP?
Coupa says Navi Connect gives AI agents more than 30 out-of-the-box tools across 4 areas: procurement, invoicing, contracts and expenses. Read and write access is limited to what the signed-in user can already do.
Coupa announced the MCP integration on 20 August 2026 as part of its September 2026 release. It describes the integration as a way for outside AI, including Microsoft Copilot and custom-built agents, to work with live spend data without custom integrations.
Not documented yet
- Coupa has not published the tool list, so the tool names are not documented.
- Which tools only read data and which create, approve or change records is not documented.
- Coupa doesn't say whether Navi Connect is generally available, in limited availability or in beta.
Can
- Work with procurement data, within the user's permissions (tool names not published)
- Work with invoicing data, within the user's permissions (tool names not published)
- Work with contracts and expenses, within the user's permissions (tool names not published)
- Read and write, per Coupa; Coupa says access is "auditable"
Cannot
- Go beyond the signed-in user's existing Coupa permissions and security controls, per Coupa
- Be connected from a published endpoint or directory listing; Coupa has not documented either as of 21 Oct 2026
What access does it get?
Per Coupa, the connecting user's existing Coupa access, read and write. Coupa does not publish scopes or a sign-in method.
| Where | Scopes and permissions (as documented) | Admin requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Coupa Navi Connect (MCP; transport not documented) | Not documented by the vendor. Coupa says access inherits each user's existing permissions and security controls and is auditable. | Not documented by the vendor. Because access follows the user's Coupa role, connect with an account whose role covers only what the agent needs. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds custom connectors; ChatGPT Business/Enterprise: an admin enables developer mode or the app. |
How do I connect it?
Ask Coupa first: as of 21 Oct 2026 Coupa has not published the server URL, the sign-in method or setup steps for any AI client. Third-party Coupa MCP connectors, such as Boomi's, are separate products and aren't covered here.
Coupa doesn't name Claude or publish a remote URL or Claude directory listing as of 21 Oct 2026. If Coupa gives you a URL, add it under Customize › Connectors › Add custom connector; on Claude Team or Enterprise, an Owner adds it. Confirm the sign-in method with Coupa first: a shared credential would not follow each user's permissions.
What should a finance team watch for?
The tools can write, and Coupa hasn't published the tool list. Setup, sign-in and availability details are also missing.
- Coupa says the integration is read-write but hasn't published which tools post, approve or change records. Until it does, assume a tool may act at once, and ask Coupa which tools can approve requisitions, invoices or expense reports, or anything that can trigger a payment.
- Access follows the user's Coupa permissions, so an agent signed in as an approver could act with approver rights. Use an account with the narrowest role that does the job.
- Endpoint, auth protocol, plan requirement, pricing and release status (GA, limited or beta) are not public; get them from Coupa before an IT or security review. The same release prices some Navi agent work in AI credits, so ask Coupa whether Navi Connect tool calls use them.
- Supplier names, invoice lines, contract text and expense descriptions are untrusted input. An instruction hidden in one could push an agent to approve, submit or pay. Keep your AI client's per-tool confirmation on for every write tool (don't pick "always allow"), and ask Coupa whether agent actions still go through your Coupa approval chains.
- Coupa says access is "auditable"; ask Coupa what its logs record for agent actions and how to review them. For data handling and model training, check Coupa's terms and your AI provider's terms.
- Third-party Coupa MCP connectors exist, such as Boomi's. Boomi publishes it, and its listing doesn't say how it signs in to Coupa, so check whether it follows each user's Coupa permissions before using it.
How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?
Start with questions and reporting on spend. Because the tools can write, any drafting use needs a person to approve the result in Coupa.
Inside a company
- Ask which invoices are waiting on approval or exceptions before month-end close.
- Summarise open purchase orders and committed spend by supplier for the budget review.
- Check contract terms or renewal dates for a supplier before approving a new requisition.
- Draft a requisition or expense report for a person to review and submit, once Coupa confirms a tool for it.
At an accounting firm
- Prepare for a client close meeting with a summary of unapproved invoices and aged exceptions.
- Review a client's spend by category or supplier when building accruals, then tie figures to Coupa reports.
- Use a client-provided Coupa account with a read-focused role; Coupa doesn't document multi-client access for firms.
- Check expense reports against the client's policy notes ahead of a review, leaving approval to the client.
Whatever the use, a person approves anything that changes Coupa or the ledger, and AI-drafted figures stay drafts until they tie to Coupa's reports.

FAQ
Is this official?
Yes. Coupa announced the MCP integration itself, through Navi Connect, on 20 August 2026. It has not yet published setup documentation, and Coupa's own pages blocked automated reading when we checked, so we confirmed the details against the Business Wire release.
Is it free?
Coupa doesn't document pricing or say which product or plan includes Navi Connect. Ask your Coupa account team.
Does it change data in Coupa?
It can. Coupa says access is "auditable and read-write" and limited to each user's existing permissions. Coupa hasn't published which tools write.
Is my data used to train models?
Coupa doesn't address this for Navi Connect in its announcement. Check Coupa's terms and your AI provider's terms before connecting.
Can my accountant use it on my behalf?
Coupa doesn't document this. Access follows a Coupa user's permissions, so an outside accountant would need their own Coupa account with a suitable role.
