Digits MCP server and Claude connector: what it reads, what it changes, how to connect
Digits hosts a read-and-write MCP server at api.digits.com/mcp, used by its Claude connector and ChatGPT app. OAuth with your Digits login. Verified 21 Oct 2026.
- Official MCP server · read & write (hosted)
- Claude connector · read & write (same server)
- ChatGPT app · read & write (per Digits docs)
- Hosting
- Remote HTTP, hosted by Digits: https://api.digits.com/mcp. The Claude connector and ChatGPT app use the same server.
- Auth
- Browser OAuth with your existing Digits login; no API keys or developer account. Every action runs as the signed-in user, within that user's Digits role.
- Read / write
- Read & write: 19 read and 18 change tools, per Digits. New invoices and bills are drafts; journal entries, recategorisations, deletions, voids and bill approvals apply at once.
- Works with
- Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, Perplexity, any MCP client
- Plan requirement
- Not documented by Digits beyond an existing Digits account. Digits itself is available only to U.S.-based businesses using USD. Your Claude or ChatGPT plan must allow connectors.
- Last changed
- Reported 15 Oct 2026 (Insightful Accountant): write tools and Locked Periods added to the existing connection

What can an agent do with Digits through MCP?
An agent can read transactions, reports, invoices and bills. It can also change the books: recategorise up to 100 transactions per call, post journal entries, draft invoices and bills, approve bills and edit the chart of accounts.
Digits documents 37 tools on one hosted server: 19 read tools and 18 change tools.
What it can read
The 19 read tools cover transactions, summaries, departments, locations, categories, financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, AR/AP aging), invoices and Bill Pay bills.
What happens when it writes
| Tools | What happens |
|---|---|
create_invoice, update_invoice, duplicate_invoice, create_bill, update_bill | Only create or edit drafts. |
delete_invoice | Removes only Draft invoices. |
propose_locked_period_change | Only files a proposal. |
The other 11: update_transaction, update_transaction_fields, create_transactions, delete_transactions, void_invoice, approve_bill, delete_bill, create_bill_vendor and the three category tools | Take effect at once. |
Money
Per Digits:
approve_billposts the bill to the books without scheduling a payment.delete_billdoesn't cancel payments.- No tool sends an invoice or moves money.
Can
- Search and summarise transactions by date, amount, party, category, department or location
- Produce P&L, balance sheet, cash flow and AR/AP aging, including department or location views
- Recategorise up to 100 transactions per call
- Create and rewrite manual journal entries, and delete transactions other than scheduled or QuickBooks-sourced ones (all immediate)
- Draft invoices and bills; delete draft invoices; void sent invoices; delete bills where status allows (doesn't cancel payments); approve bills as an assigned approver (posts to the books)
- Add categories and change their name, number, description, parent, type or subtype, or turn them off; add Bill Pay vendors
- Propose changes to locked periods for an approver to review
Cannot
- Send an invoice, pay a bill, schedule a payment or move money (per Digits)
- Change amounts or dates on bank-synced transactions (per Digits)
- Edit sent invoices beyond recategorising their lines (per Digits)
- Edit bills past Draft; that is done in Digits (per Digits)
- Delete scheduled or QuickBooks-sourced transactions (per Digits)
- Change a locked period directly, even as an approver (per Digits)
What access does it get?
Each connection acts as one Digits user with that user's existing role, across every business that user can reach. Digits does not publish OAuth scope names.
| Where | Scopes and permissions (as documented) | Admin requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Digits MCP server (api.digits.com/mcp) | Not documented by the vendor as named scopes. OAuth with the Digits login; bearer token in a header. Reaches every business the user can access. Changes are logged under the user's name; Digits says there is no separate AI log. | Digits doesn't document an admin step for MCP. Bill approval needs approver permission on that bill. |
| Claude directory connector | Not documented by the vendor. Same server and sign-in. The Claude listing still shows 4 tools; Digits says write tools appear in existing connections. | Digits says a connection stuck in Requested may need the AI workspace admin to approve it. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds connectors. |
| ChatGPT app | Not documented by the vendor. Install the app and authorise with the Digits login, per Digits' connect guide. | Not documented by the vendor; ChatGPT workspace admins control which apps members can use |
How do I connect it?
Every client uses the same URL, https://api.digits.com/mcp, followed by a sign-in with your Digits account; Digits says no API keys are needed.
- Open the Digits connector in Claude's directory and click Connect. Digits links https://claude.ai/directory/connectors/digits; the public listing is https://claude.com/connectors/digits.
- Sign in with your existing Digits account when prompted, then start a new chat.
- To limit changes, turn off unwanted Digits tools or require approval per action in the connector's settings, as Digits suggests.
Team/Enterprise: an Owner must add or approve the connector; Digits says a connection stuck in Requested may be waiting for that approval.
What should a finance team watch for?
Several Digits tools change the books immediately, so the main control is who connects and whether your AI client asks before each change.
- Journal entries, recategorisations, transaction and bill deletions, invoice voids, bill approvals and category edits take effect at once; only new or edited invoices and bills stay in Draft. Treat the connection as write access to the ledger.
- approve_bill posts a bill to the books, and delete_bill doesn't cancel payments, per Digits. Digits says approve_bill doesn't schedule a payment; check your Bill Pay settings anyway.
- Digits publishes no scopes and no MCP admin toggle. It doesn't document a way to revoke an MCP grant inside Digits, so to remove access, disconnect in the AI client or change the user's Digits access. Keep each user's Digits role tight and switch off unwanted tools in the AI client. A firm user's connection reaches every client business that user can access, so a firm may prefer a narrowly scoped Digits user for agent work.
- Lock reconciled periods: agent changes there become proposals an approver accepts under Checklist › Locked Periods, even for approvers. Digits says that removing a period's lock (or using Unlock All Periods) approves and applies every pending proposal in it. Review agent proposals before you remove the lock. Approvers can still edit locked transactions directly in Digits, which rejects pending proposals for that transaction.
- Recategorisation is capped at 100 transactions per call.
- Digits says categories keep no change history; Category Manager shows only the current setup. Agent edits to the chart of accounts (rename, renumber, re-parent, change type or subtype) leave no audit trail in Digits.
- Memos, descriptions and party names are free text. An injected instruction could push the agent to post, delete or approve, so keep per-action approval on.
- Digits says data is encrypted and accessed only on request; its MCP page says nothing on retention or training. Read Digits' privacy policy and your AI provider's terms.
How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?
Read tools suit reporting and questions; the change tools suit drafting and clean-up work that a person reviews, with per-action approval kept on in the AI client.
Inside a company
- Ask for the month's P&L by department or location, or a year-on-year expense comparison, without exporting reports.
- List unpaid invoices and bills awaiting approval before a cash meeting.
- Draft invoices or bills, then review and send or approve them in Digits.
- Have the agent propose recategorisations for a batch of transactions; review the proposed list, then approve the batch call before the agent applies it.
At an accounting firm
- Summarise a client's results and top vendors by spend before a client review.
- Run month-end checks across the businesses you can access in Digits and list what needs attention.
- Have the agent prepare accrual or reclass journal entries and show them in chat; a reviewer approves the tool call before it posts, since Digits has no draft journal entry.
- Lock closed periods so any later agent change arrives as a proposal for the approver. Review those proposals before anyone removes the lock, since that applies them all.
Whatever the use, keep a person approving anything that changes the ledger, and treat AI-drafted figures as drafts until they tie to the Digits report.

FAQ
Is this official?
Yes. Digits hosts and documents the server, and the Claude listing names Digits Financial, Inc. as developer, marked Anthropic verified.
Is it free?
Digits doesn't state a separate price or plan for MCP; its help page says you sign in with your existing Digits account. Your Claude or ChatGPT plan must allow connectors.
Does it change data in Digits?
Yes. It can post journal entries, recategorise, delete transactions, void invoices and approve bills immediately. New invoices and bills are drafts, and locked-period changes need an approver.
Is my data used to train models?
Digits' MCP page doesn't address training or retention; it says data is encrypted and accessed only on request. Check Digits' privacy policy and your AI provider's terms.
Can my accountant use it on my behalf?
Digits documents MCP for firms: an accountant connects with their own Digits login and reaches the client businesses their firm access allows, with changes logged under their name.
