What can an agent do with Double through MCP?

It can read and update your Double account, including some financial reporting. Double says its MCP tools cover clients, tasks, close periods and users. Its tool reference says MCP shares Ask Double's tools apart from a few, with examples such as pulling a Q2 P&L and adding a footnote on rent expense.

Double doesn't publish a fixed tool list. Its tool reference says the MCP server uses the tools of Ask Double, its in-app assistant, apart from a few it keeps in Ask Double and doesn't name.

What that means

  • Any Ask Double capability may or may not be on your MCP connection.
  • To see the current list, connect and ask the assistant.
  • Each tool either reads or writes.
  • Because there is no published list, a tool-by-tool map of what posts and what drafts isn't possible from Double's docs.

Examples in the tool reference

The sample prompts, written for Ask Double, include:

  • A client P&L
  • Reports for a Sage client
  • Loan tools
  • A file tool (get_file)
  • Creating a client question
  • Adding a report footnote
  • For MCP clients, it suggests asking whether the assistant can pull a client P&L.

What Ask Double itself can do

  • Query transactions, the chart of accounts, P&L and balance sheet reports.
  • Post seven QuickBooks transaction types once you approve.
  • Double doesn't say which of these reach MCP.

How writes behave

Double doesn't document whether MCP writes apply at once or wait for approval. Its MCP examples (reassigning or creating tasks) describe direct changes, so treat every write as immediate.

Can

  • Read clients, tasks, close periods and users (per Double's AI workflows page)
  • Create and update tasks, for example creating action items with an assignee and due date, or reassigning a teammate's work (per Double's MCP examples)
  • Pull financial reports such as a client P&L, including reports for Sage clients (per Double's tool reference; Double doesn't say which tools are Ask Double-only)
  • Add footnotes to report lines, for example explaining a rent-expense increase. This is a write (per Double's tool reference)
  • Create client questions and use loan and file tools (per the Ask Double sample prompts in Double's tool reference; Double doesn't say whether these are on MCP or Ask Double-only)
  • Summarise team workload and on-time completion from task data (per Double's MCP examples)
  • List the tools available on your connection when you ask the assistant (Double's documented way to see the current tool set)

Cannot

  • Use every Ask Double tool: Double says a few tools are available in Ask Double only, without naming them
  • Show a published, static tool list: Double says the current list is available on request
  • Create a bill payment through Ask Double's transaction tool: per Double, it supports seven types and declines others such as bill payments

What access does it get?

The agent acts as the Double user who signs in. Double publishes no OAuth scopes and the server's metadata lists none. Double says some write tools depend on that user's role and client access in Double.

WhereScopes and permissions (as documented)Admin requirement
Double MCP server (remote, all clients)Not documented by the vendor. Sign in with your Double account; the server's OAuth metadata lists no scopes. Set per-tool permissions in each client: Double recommends allowing read-only tools (names starting with list or get) and setting write tools more granularly.Double doesn't document who in a firm may connect. Per Double, some write tools depend on the connected user's role and client access, and AI user permissions are managed in Practice Settings. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds the custom connector, then each member connects individually (per Double).
Double app in ChatGPTNot documented by the vendor. Connect and sign in with your Double account.Double doesn't document this. ChatGPT Business/Enterprise: an admin must allow the app before members can use it.

How do I connect it?

Add https://api.doublehq.com/mcp as a custom connector in Claude, or open the Double app in ChatGPT, then sign in with your Double account. Double's help article also gives setup for Gemini CLI (an entry in ~/.gemini/settings.json, then /mcp auth double) and Copilot Studio (Tools, Model Context Protocol, OAuth 2.0 with dynamic discovery, using the mcp-dynamic-tool-search URL).

  1. Team/Enterprise: an Owner must add the custom connector for the organisation first (steps 2 to 4); each member then connects it individually.
  2. In the Claude desktop app (the path Double documents) or on claude.ai, open the sidebar and go to Customize › Connectors.
  3. Click + then Add custom connector. Name it Double and enter https://api.doublehq.com/mcp as the remote server URL.
  4. Sign in with your Double account when prompted.
  5. In the connector's tool permissions, set every write tool to ask for approval. Double recommends Always allow for read-only tools and finer settings for write tools.

Double has no Claude directory listing; this is a custom connector.

What should a finance team watch for?

The main risk is unattended writes, possibly including QuickBooks postings. The agent acts with the signed-in user's Double access, and Double documents no approval step on the MCP side. Keep write tools on per-use approval in your client.

  • Writes: Double doesn't say whether MCP changes apply immediately or as drafts. Its examples act directly on your account, so review each write before you allow it.
  • QuickBooks postings: Ask Double creates bills, credit card credits, vendor credits, invoices, deposits, expenses and journal entries, and posts them to QuickBooks once you confirm in its chat. Double doesn't say whether that tool is on MCP. If it is, your AI client's tool-approval prompt may be the only check before an entry reaches the ledger. List the write tools and keep any QuickBooks tool on per-use approval.
  • Bank feeds: Ask Double can import statement transactions into a Double bank feed as pending items after you confirm a preview. Double doesn't say whether this is on MCP.
  • Costs: Double includes AI credits in each plan (per Double, $1, $5 or $10 per client per month on Core, Plus and Scale), pooled across the firm, with optional overage billing. Ask Double draws on them, and Double says AI features pause across all clients when the pool runs out until a Super Admin raises the budget or the cycle resets. Double doesn't say whether MCP use draws credits.
  • Coverage: Double says Ask Double works with QuickBooks clients only and transaction creation needs the Scale plan. Its tool reference also mentions Sage reports. Double doesn't say which clients or plans MCP covers.
  • Copilot Studio limits an MCP server to 70 tools, per Double, so use https://api.doublehq.com/mcp-dynamic-tool-search there.
  • Double keeps no static tool list, so the tools can change. Re-check them and your client permissions from time to time.
  • Task titles, client notes, transcripts, files and report text come back as free text. An injected instruction there could push the agent to reassign or change work, add a footnote, post a QuickBooks entry if that tool is exposed, or act through other connected tools (Double's own example creates Google Calendar entries from Double tasks). Keep human approval on for write tools.
  • Double's MCP help article doesn't address data retention or model training. Read Double's privacy policy and your AI provider's terms before connecting client data.

How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?

Read tools suit status questions, close tracking and report pulls. Write tools suit drafting tasks and report notes, with a person approving each change before it lands in Double or QuickBooks.

Inside a company

  • Ask which close tasks are overdue or due today, and who owns them, without opening Double.
  • Pull the Q2 P&L and draft a variance note for the controller to review.
  • Turn a month-end meeting transcript into proposed tasks with owners and due dates, approved one by one.
  • Draft a footnote explaining a rent-expense increase, approved before it is saved.

At an accounting firm

  • Review team workload and late completions across clients to rebalance assignments.
  • Prepare for a client check-in by pulling that client's P&L and open tasks into a short summary.
  • Create onboarding action items for a new client from a call transcript, reviewed before they are saved.
  • Draft client questions about unusual items for a reviewer to approve before they go out.

Whatever the use, keep a person approving anything that changes Double or the client's books, and treat AI summaries as drafts until checked in Double.

FAQ

Is this official?

Yes. Double documents the server in its help centre, hosts it at api.doublehq.com, and links to its ChatGPT app. Claude has no directory listing for it, so you add it as a custom connector.

Is it free?

Double doesn't state a price or plan requirement for MCP. Ask Double, which shares its tools, runs on AI credits that Double includes in each plan ($1 to $10 per client per month), with optional overage billing if a Super Admin enables it. Double says Ask Double works with QuickBooks clients only and posting transactions needs Scale. It doesn't say whether MCP use draws credits or is plan-gated.

Does it change data in Double?

Yes. Double says its write tools create and change data, such as creating and reassigning tasks or adding a report footnote. Ask Double can also post QuickBooks transactions, and Double doesn't say whether MCP has that tool. Set write tools to ask for approval in your client.

Is my data used to train models?

Double's MCP documentation doesn't address training or retention. Check Double's privacy policy and your AI provider's terms.

Can my accountant use it on my behalf?

Double doesn't document this. The connection acts as the Double user who signs in, and Double says some write tools depend on that user's role and client access.
