What can an agent do with Financial Cents through MCP?

It can read your firm's clients, projects, tasks, time, invoices, payments, proposals and client chat, and update most of those records. It cannot delete anything, charge a card or send an invoice.

Financial Cents' guide lists 37 tools: 22 read, 15 write and none that delete.

What happens when it writes

Most writes apply at once. Financial Cents says the AI client asks you to confirm first.

RecordWhat happens
New invoicesCreated as drafts.
Edits to finalized invoices, credit applications and chat messagesTake effect immediately.
Time entriesRecorded directly.
Updates to finalized invoices, service items and credit memosSync to QuickBooks when the firm is connected, per the guide.
Tax codes created hereDon't sync to QuickBooks.

Writes that reach clients at once

  • Sending a chat message emails the topic's client contacts. It can't be undone through the tool.
  • Uploads to portal-shared folders email portal contacts.
  • Files attached to a client task are visible to the client in the portal.

Money

  • Spending a credit memo on a non-draft invoice records a $0 payment and can mark it Paid. It emails the client's contacts if the invoice is fully settled.
  • The invoice tool doesn't send, charge, void or delete.

Can

  • Read clients, contacts, tasks, attachments and client chat
  • Read projects, project tasks and attachments
  • Read invoices, payments, credit memos, proposals and payment methods
  • Read time entries, team members and tags (billing and labor cost rates only for users with manage billing rate)
  • Create and update clients, projects and tasks
  • Log time and start timers
  • Send and edit client chat messages (sending emails clients)
  • Upload files to projects, clients and client requests
  • Create and update invoices, credit memos, discounts, service items and tax codes

Cannot

  • Delete any record, per Financial Cents
  • Charge cards or send invoices, per Financial Cents' guide. The tool can set up recurring invoices and attach a client's saved payment method; Financial Cents doesn't document whether its own billing schedule later sends or charges them, so review these in the app
  • Connect more than one firm account per connection; the token is bound to the firm chosen at consent
  • See or do more than the signed-in user can in the app, per Financial Cents

What access does it get?

One OAuth scope, mcp:use, on a token bound to a single firm account, with every tool checked against the signed-in user's own Financial Cents permissions.

WhereScopes and permissions (as documented)Admin requirement
Financial Cents MCP (remote, OAuth)The server's OAuth metadata lists one scope: mcp:use. No read-only scope is documented. Tools run under the user's app permissions; billing rates need manage billing rate, and discounts, tax codes and invoice templates need manage invoices, per the guide. At consent you pick one firm account.Scale plan. Financial Cents doesn't document an admin approval step; tokens stop working when the user leaves the firm. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds the connector. ChatGPT Business/Enterprise/Edu: an admin enables developer mode and publishes it.

How do I connect it?

Add https://app.financial-cents.com/mcp as a custom connector or remote MCP server, sign in to Financial Cents, choose one firm account and approve; no client ID or secret is needed.

  1. In Claude (web or desktop), go to Customize › Connectors, click + and choose Add custom connector. Team/Enterprise Owners use Organization settings › Connectors.
  2. Name it Financial Cents, paste https://app.financial-cents.com/mcp and leave Advanced settings empty.
  3. Click Add, then Connect; sign in to Financial Cents, pick one firm account and approve the consent screen.
  4. In a chat, open + › Connectors and turn Financial Cents on. Keep write tools on approval in Claude's connector settings.

Not in Claude's connector directory as of 21 Oct 2026. Financial Cents says Claude Free allows one custom connector.

What should a finance team watch for?

Most writes apply at once. New invoices start as drafts, but edits to finalized invoices, credit applications and chat messages take effect immediately. The AI client's confirmation prompt is the main control.

  • No read-only mode or narrower scope is documented: mcp:use gives the agent every tool your user role allows. Connect with a user holding only the permissions needed, and keep per-tool approval on.
  • Client-facing writes: chat messages email client contacts and can't be undone through the tool; uploads to portal-shared folders email portal contacts; files attached to a client task are visible in the client portal; spending credit on a non-draft invoice can mark it Paid and emails the client's contacts if it is fully settled, per the guide.
  • Billing writes don't move money, but applying credit can record a $0 payment and mark invoices Paid, per the guide. A discount change affects every invoice and proposal using it.
  • QuickBooks: updates to finalized invoices, service item changes, and credit memo changes and spends sync to QuickBooks when the firm is connected, per the guide; tax codes created over MCP never sync.
  • Money units differ by tool: invoices, payments and credit memos use integer cents, while time entries, billing rates and service item rates use dollars, per the guide. An agent that mixes them could misprice an invoice line 100 times over, so check amounts in each confirmation prompt.
  • For users holding manage billing rate, time entries and user lookups also return labor_rate, what each team member costs the firm, per the guide. Unless margin analysis is the point, connect with a user who lacks that permission.
  • Chat, task notes and attachments come back as free text. Financial Cents says it marks client-written content such as chat messages and topic names as untrusted, but an injected instruction could still push the agent to message a client or apply credit. Financial Cents adds its own confirmation only for uploads that email portal contacts; every other write relies on the AI client's prompt, so don't set write tools to always allow, and read each confirmation before approving.
  • One firm per connection; rate limited (no numbers published); uploads cap at 50 MB, per the guide. Results are capped: list_invoices returns the first ten line items per invoice, get_invoice up to 100, chat reads the newest 50 messages and list_clients up to 25 contacts per client; download links expire after 10 minutes.
  • Financial Cents says every tool call is audited and access is revoked under Settings › API › FC MCP, taking effect immediately, per the guide; its product page labels the tab MCP. Its MCP pages make no training statement; check its terms and your AI provider's.

How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?

Financial Cents is practice management software for firms. Reads suit workload and billing questions. Writes suit task, time and billing updates that a person confirms before they apply.

Inside a company

  • For an in-house team that tracks close work in Financial Cents, ask which month-end tasks are overdue and who owns them.
  • Confirm task updates or time entries drafted after a close meeting (team tasks only; tasks in Month End Close sections can't be updated through MCP, and locked time entries or ones on a finalized invoice are refused, per the guide).
  • Find the latest files and chat threads for a project before a review.

At an accounting firm

  • Ask what is overdue this week (an example Financial Cents gives), or which month-end close projects are behind.
  • Prepare for a client call by summarising open tasks, recent chat and unpaid invoices for that client.
  • Create or clone a recurring client project from a firm template and assign the team tasks on it, confirming each change.

Whatever the use, keep a person approving anything that emails a client, changes an invoice or credit, or alters the firm's records.

FAQ

Is this official?

Yes. Financial Cents hosts the server at app.financial-cents.com and documents it in its own setup guide. Zapier runs a separate Financial Cents app on Zapier's MCP.

Is it free?

It is included on the Financial Cents Scale plan, per Financial Cents, with no separate MCP charge documented. Financial Cents lists Scale at $69 per user per month billed annually, with a 14-day free trial, on its pricing page. Your AI client may need a paid plan; ChatGPT developer mode does.

Does it change data in Financial Cents?

Yes. It can update clients, projects, tasks and time, message clients, upload files and edit invoices, credit memos, discounts and tax codes. It can't delete, charge cards or send invoices, per Financial Cents.

Is my data used to train models?

Financial Cents doesn't address training on its MCP pages. Its 20 Oct 2026 launch announcement says it is SOC 2 certified and encrypts data in transit and at rest. Check Financial Cents' and your AI provider's terms before connecting.

Can my accountant use it on my behalf?

Financial Cents doesn't document this. A connection runs as the signed-in user with that user's permissions in one firm account, so anyone connecting needs their own login to that firm.
