Numeric MCP server: what it reads and writes in your close, what access it gets, how to connect
Numeric hosts an official remote MCP server at api.numeric.io/mcp that reads reports and GL lines and writes close tasks, comments and flux explanations. Verified 21 Oct 2026.

- Hosting
- Remote HTTP, hosted by Numeric (https://api.numeric.io/mcp). No local or open-source server.
- Auth
- OAuth sign-in with your Numeric login (authorization server auth.numeric.io). No API key is needed
- Read / write
- Read and write inside Numeric: tasks, comments and flux explanations. No tool posts journal entries to your ERP or moves money
- Works with
- Claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code (documented steps); ChatGPT, Gemini and Cursor named by Numeric without steps
- Plan requirement
- A Numeric account with at least one workspace. Numeric's getting-started article lists Claude Team or Enterprise; no separate MCP price is published, and Numeric says running cost depends on team size and workflow frequency

What can an agent do with Numeric through MCP?
It can read saved and ad-hoc reports, GL transaction lines, the chart of accounts and flux explanations, and it can create, edit, assign, submit, approve and comment on close tasks and write flux explanations.
Tool groups
Numeric's launch post lists 22 tools in three groups:
| Group | Tools |
|---|---|
| Workspace and context | 3 |
| Close task management | 10 |
| Financial reporting and GL data | 9 |
What happens when it writes
Numeric's tool list has no draft step. Write tools change records in Numeric directly, although Numeric says Claude shows what will change before it runs a write.
| Tool | What happens |
|---|---|
| Task tools | Edit your checklist. Several work in batch. |
submit_task | Submits a task for review, approves it or returns it, so an agent can sign off a close task. |
add_task_comment | Posts comments with @mentions. |
update_flux_explanation | Writes variance explanations onto report rows. |
Money
- None of the 22 tools posts a journal entry to your ERP, and none pays, transfers or approves money.
- Numeric's accruals example posts the entry through the ERP's own MCP server, a separate connection.
Report limits
Per Numeric:
build_reportsupports 5 pivot dimensions and 6 comparison types.get_report_row_trendreturns up to 6 periods.
Can
- Read workspace context: users, periods, entities, GL connections, tag groups and permissions
- Pull saved reports as structured data, build ad-hoc balance sheets and income statements, and trend a report row over time
- Drill into the GL transaction lines behind a report row and list the chart of accounts
- Create, edit, reassign, reschedule and tag close tasks, including batch edits (writes in Numeric)
- Submit, approve or return a task, and read or post task comments (writes in Numeric)
- Read and write flux explanations on report rows (writes in Numeric)
Cannot
- Post journal entries to NetSuite, QuickBooks or another GL (no such tool; Numeric's accruals example uses the ERP's own MCP server)
- Pay, transfer or approve money (no such tool is listed by Numeric)
- Run locally or with an API key (Numeric documents only the hosted server with a Numeric login)
What access does it get?
The agent gets the same access as the Numeric user who signs in. The OAuth sign-in asks only for identity scopes, so your role in Numeric sets what the agent can reach.
| Where | Scopes and permissions (as documented) | Admin requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Remote MCP server (OAuth sign-in) | Numeric says the agent gets the same access as your Numeric account. The server's OAuth metadata lists only openid, email, profile and offline_access, so Numeric advertises no scopes that narrow what the agent can do; access follows the Numeric user's role. offline_access means the client holds a refresh token, so to cut access, disconnect the connector or remove the user in Numeric. Multi-workspace users switch with set_workspace. | Numeric's getting-started article says a Claude administrator must enable the connector and controls whether write tools are on. In Claude, each tool can be set to Always allow, Ask every time or Never allow. |
How do I connect it?
Add https://api.numeric.io/mcp as a custom connector in Claude or as a remote server in Claude Code, then log in with your Numeric account.
- In Claude, open Settings › Connectors, click + and choose Add Custom Connector (Numeric's documented steps).
- Paste https://api.numeric.io/mcp and click Add. Numeric says that on a Team plan your administrator may need to complete these steps.
- On Claude Team or Enterprise (standard Claude mechanic): an Owner adds the custom connector for the organisation in admin settings, then each member connects and logs in to Numeric individually.
- Log in with your Numeric account when prompted.
- Set the write tools to Ask every time or Never allow before first use; Numeric suggests starting read-only.
Numeric doesn't publish a listing in the Claude connector directory as of 21 Oct 2026.
What should a finance team watch for?
Write tools run immediately with your full Numeric permissions, and that includes approving close tasks. Keep them on ask and review every change before it runs.
- Sign-off risk: submit_task can approve or return tasks, and several task tools work in batch. Numeric says every bulk operation can be previewed before committing; leave Ask every time on so you see that preview.
- Least privilege: OAuth carries no Numeric-specific scopes, so the agent has the same permissions as the signed-in user. Pick a user whose role fits the job, and disable write tools for reporting-only use.
- Prompt injection: comments, review notes and flux explanations are free text. An injected instruction there could push the agent to approve tasks or, with an ERP connector attached, post an entry. Keep human approval on.
- Audit trail: Numeric says agent actions on tasks are logged in Numeric; get_task_events returns a task's history.
- Cost: Numeric's launch post says running cost depends on team size and how often each workflow runs, and points to a cost calculator.
- report_bug sends details of unexpected behaviour to Numeric; check what it includes before allowing it.
- Data handling: Numeric's MCP pages and its privacy policy (updated 23 Sep 2025) don't address model training. Check Numeric's and your AI provider's terms.
- Numeric's main MCP help article now needs a Numeric login, so its Codex, Gemini and ChatGPT notes are not re-verified here.
How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?
Use the read tools for close questions and reporting, and the write tools to draft task updates and flux explanations that a reviewer approves before they run.
Inside a company
- Ask which close tasks are overdue or unassigned for the period, then approve a proposed batch reassignment before it runs.
- Draft flux explanations from GL transaction lines behind a variance and approve each one before it is written to the report.
- Build an ad-hoc income statement with comparisons and draft board-pack commentary to edit.
- Pair with your ERP's own MCP server for accruals: a person approves the entry in the ERP before the Numeric task is submitted.
At an accounting firm
- Prepare an audit packet from a client's saved reports, trends and flux explanations.
- Summarise open review notes and task comments across a client's checklist before a status call.
- Draft comments asking client staff for missing support, posted only after a person approves them.
- Switch client workspaces with set_workspace, confirming the active workspace before any write.
Whatever the use, a person approves anything that changes Numeric or the ledger, and approves close sign-offs in Numeric itself.

FAQ
Is this official?
Yes. Numeric hosts the server at api.numeric.io and documents it in its help centre and launch post.
Is it free?
Numeric doesn't publish a separate MCP price. You need a Numeric account, and its getting-started article lists a Claude Team or Enterprise plan. Numeric says running cost depends on team size and how often each workflow runs.
Does it change data in Numeric?
Yes. It can create, edit, reassign, approve and return close tasks, post comments and write flux explanations. It does not post journal entries to your ERP or move money.
Is my data used to train models?
Numeric's MCP pages and privacy policy don't say. Check Numeric's terms and your AI provider's terms.
Can my accountant use it on my behalf?
Numeric doesn't document this for MCP. Numeric says Claude gets the same access as the signed-in Numeric user. Confirm with Numeric how outside accountants are added as users in your workspace.
