Pigment MCP server: what it reads, what advanced mode can change, and how to connect Claude or ChatGPT

Pigment hosts an OAuth MCP server with a unique URL per workspace: read-only by default, modeling writes in opt-in advanced mode, also in Claude's directory. Verified 21 Oct 2026.

Hosting
Remote HTTP, hosted by Pigment. Each Workspace and each Test & Deploy environment gets its own endpoint, in the form https://pigment.app/api/mcp/public/{id}. No local server.
Auth
OAuth 2.1 with Dynamic Client Registration, signing in with your Pigment account. Pigment says API keys are not supported.
Read / write
Default mode: 14 read-only tools. Advanced mode (off by default, enabled per user): 83 tools that build and edit Applications, Blocks, formulas, Views and Boards, and input data.
Works with
Claude.ai and Desktop (directory listing or custom connector), Claude Code, ChatGPT (developer mode), Cursor, Gemini CLI, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Mistral Le Chat, Dust, n8n, Zapier
Plan requirement
Pigment AI must be active; Pigment says it is on by default unless your organisation opted out. Pigment publishes no separate MCP price, and its MCP page shows no subscription pricing (it offers a demo). Cost depends on your Pigment contract plus your AI client plan.

What can an agent do with Pigment through MCP?

By default an agent can find Applications, Boards and Views, read Metric structure and query Metric and List data you can already see. With advanced mode switched on, it can also build and edit models.

Pigment's plugin repository lists 14 default-mode tools and 83 advanced-mode tools.

Advanced mode

Advanced tools act on the Application directly. Pigment does not describe them as drafts. They include:

  • set_metric_input (enter data)
  • update_metric (change formulas)
  • delete_application, delete_block and delete_list_items
  • Views are the exception, with a save_draft_views tool.

Sandboxes

  • An October 2026 tool, delete_sandbox, removes a sandbox and its cloned Application without touching the live one, per Pigment.
  • Pigment's tool list doesn't show how a sandbox is created over MCP.

Money

  • No tool pays, approves spend or posts to a general ledger. Pigment is a planning system.

Can

  • Find Applications, folders, Boards, Views and Tables (default)
  • Search Metrics and Lists, including semantic search, and read a Metric's dimensions, dependencies and context (default)
  • Retrieve Metric data filtered by Items, and Dimension or Transaction List data (default)
  • Create, duplicate or delete Applications, Blocks, Lists and planning cycles (advanced, write)
  • Write and validate formulas, and input data into Metrics and List properties (advanced, write)
  • Build and edit Views, Boards and Frames; read the audit trail and performance profiles (advanced)

Cannot

  • Read Metrics other than Number, Integer and Boolean types (per Pigment)
  • Read data in a Block whose AI data access setting is off (per Pigment)
  • Do anything the signed-in user can't already do in Pigment; for example create_metric fails without Configure Blocks (per Pigment)
  • Reach another Workspace or environment through the same endpoint URL (per Pigment)
  • Connect through Gemini Enterprise or any client without OAuth 2.1 Dynamic Client Registration (per Pigment)

What access does it get?

The connection acts as the Pigment user who signs in, with that user's existing roles and access rights. Pigment says MCP grants no extra access.

WhereScopes and permissions (as documented)Admin requirement
Pigment MCP server (per-Workspace endpoint)No OAuth scope names published. Access is the user's Pigment permissions: the Use AI Agents permission per Application (without it every MCP call fails), AI data access per Block (on by default), and the user's own advanced-mode setting for write tools. Pigment notes the advanced search tool exposes Block metadata, which access rights do not cover.A Security Administrator, Workspace Administrator or Primary Owner enables MCP in Settings › Integrations › MCP. Once a connector uses the URL, all Workspace Members can connect. Clients outside Pigment's built-in list must be added there by callback URL.
Pigment connector in the Claude directorySign-in with Pigment required; the listing shows three tools (GetApplications, FindAiMetrics, QueryData). Pigment's permissions and AI data access settings apply. Scope names are not documented by the vendor. Pigment doesn't document whether advanced-mode tools appear through the directory connector; check the tool list under Tool permissions after connecting.MCP must be enabled in the Pigment Workspace first. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds connectors. Pigment doesn't document whether the directory connector needs your Workspace URL.

How do I connect it?

A Pigment admin switches on MCP and copies the Workspace endpoint URL. You add that URL to your AI client as a remote server and sign in with Pigment. Claude users can also start from the directory listing.

  1. In Pigment, an admin opens Settings › Integrations › MCP, toggles on MCP (Model Context Protocol) and copies the endpoint URL.
  2. Directory route: open claude.com/connectors/pigment and select Add to Claude, then sign in with Pigment. On Claude Team/Enterprise, an Owner adds the connector before members can connect.
  3. Custom route (Pigment's guide): an Owner opens Customize › Connectors › Add custom connector, pastes the URL and leaves the OAuth client fields empty.
  4. Each user then opens Settings › Connectors, selects Connect on Pigment and signs in. Under Tool permissions, set write tools to Needs approval or Blocked.

Pigment's guide says creating the custom connector needs Owner privileges.

What should a finance team watch for?

Once MCP is on, every Block is readable by default. Advanced-mode tools change live Applications. Check access rights, and who switches on advanced mode, before anyone connects.

  • Per Pigment, AI data access is on for all Blocks by default, and all Roles have AI agent access by default. Switch data access off on sensitive Metrics, or remove Use AI Agents to keep a whole Application out. Turning data access off stops data queries only; per Pigment it doesn't block structure, configuration or View edits.
  • Advanced mode is per user and off by default. Leave it off for people who only need answers. Write tools still respect Configure Blocks and other permissions.
  • Advanced tools include deletes and data input that act on the Application directly. Set them to Needs approval in your client and review each call.
  • Block metadata (names, data types, dimensions) is visible to the advanced search tool regardless of access rights, so keep sensitive detail out of names.
  • One endpoint and connector per Workspace and per Test & Deploy environment; make sure users connect to the right one.
  • Tool names change: the October 2026 changelog deprecated query_data and get_ai_metrics, which the Claude listing still shows. Refresh tool permissions after updates.
  • Metric names, descriptions and Board text are free text. An injected instruction there could push an agent in advanced mode to overwrite inputs or delete Blocks, so keep human approval on.
  • Pigment says its own AI provider calls use zero data retention and customer data is not used for training. Data returned to Claude or ChatGPT over MCP falls under that provider's terms; check Pigment's Trust Center and your AI provider's terms.

How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?

Default mode suits variance questions and reporting from planning data. Advanced mode suits drafting model changes that a modeler reviews before anyone relies on them.

Inside a company

  • Ask why a cost centre is tracking above forecast and pull the Metric data behind the answer.
  • Trace a Metric's dependencies to explain how a headcount or revenue figure is calculated.
  • Draft commentary for a monthly business review from a Board's Views, then check it against Pigment.
  • In advanced mode, have the agent draft a View with save_draft_views for a modeler to review before it is shared.

At an accounting firm

  • For a fractional CFO client, summarise actuals versus budget from the client's Pigment Workspace before the monthly call.
  • With advanced mode on, list a client model's issues and slowest Blocks for the client's modeler, without editing anything.
  • Use Pigment's audit skill to prepare a model health report that a reviewer signs off.
  • Confirm which Workspace and environment the endpoint belongs to before each session, since each has its own URL.

Whatever the use, keep a person approving anything that changes a live Pigment Application, and treat AI-written figures as drafts until they tie to Pigment's own reports.

FAQ

Is this official?

Yes. Pigment hosts the server, documents it in its knowledge base and publishes the plugins on GitHub (gopigment/ai-plugins). The Claude directory listing says it is made by Pigment.

Is it free?

Pigment doesn't publish a separate MCP price. The server needs Pigment AI, which Pigment says is on by default unless your organisation opted out; you also need an AI client plan that supports connectors.

Does it change data in Pigment?

Not in default mode, which is read-only. If a user turns on advanced mode, write tools can input data, edit formulas and delete Blocks or Applications, within that user's Pigment permissions.

Is my data used to train models?

Pigment says data sent to AI providers is not retained or used for training. That covers Pigment's side; check your AI provider's terms for what the client keeps.

Can my accountant use it on my behalf?

Pigment doesn't document adviser access for MCP. The connection acts as whoever signs in, so an accountant would need their own Pigment membership in your Workspace, and their permissions set what the AI can see or change.
