Pleo MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot: what it changes, access, how to connect
Pleo hosts one remote MCP server that reads and updates expenses, including approvals and the export queue, once an admin opts in. It can't make payments. Verified 21 Oct 2026.

What can an agent do with Pleo through MCP?
It can find, complete, approve or reject individual expenses and add ready ones to the export queue. It works only within the signed-in user's Pleo permissions. It cannot make payments or change company setup.
Pleo says the server focuses on expense processing, with read tools for searching expenses and write tools for updating them. Pleo publishes no tool names or tool count.
How writes behave
- Pleo describes no draft step. An update changes the expense in Pleo and is logged in its Activity tab.
- Approving, rejecting and adding to the export queue are also writes.
- Pleo says clients such as Claude and ChatGPT ask for approval before write actions by default. The user can change that setting in the AI tool.
- Each request targets one entity.
Can
- Search expenses and find ones missing details or receipts (read)
- Set categories, tags, tax-code splits, notes and attendees (write, applied directly)
- Attach receipts up to 5 MB per file, per Pleo (write)
- List expenses awaiting your review and approve or reject them once you decide (write)
- Add export-ready expenses to the export queue (write)
Cannot
- Top up the wallet, pay out reimbursements, pay invoices or make payment decisions, per Pleo
- Change company setup or configuration, per Pleo
- Go beyond the user's existing Pleo permissions, per Pleo
- Combine two entities in one request, or reach an entity without admin opt-in, per Pleo
What access does it get?
The signed-in user's existing Pleo permissions, per entity, once a company admin has turned on MCP access. Pleo publishes no OAuth scope names.
| Where | Scopes and permissions (as documented) | Admin requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Pleo MCP server (remote) | Not documented by the vendor. Pleo says the agent inherits the user's permissions and grants no new ones; a spender can read and update their own expenses. | Off by default. A company admin enables it per entity under Settings › General › Pleo AI › MCP › Pleo MCP access. Pleo says per-user controls aren't available yet. |
| Claude (custom connector) | Same server. Claude's per-tool settings apply; Pleo recommends Needs approval for write tools. | Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner, Primary Owner or Identity & Access role adds Pleo under Organization settings › Connectors, per Pleo. Each member still approves in Pleo. |
| ChatGPT (custom app) | Same server; you approve on Pleo's consent screen. Scope names not shown. | Plus/Pro: add it yourself in developer mode. Business/Enterprise/Edu: an Owner or Admin publishes it and sets it to Installed; each member then authorises, per Pleo. |
How do I connect it?
After a Pleo admin turns on MCP access, add https://mcp.pleo.io/mcp as a custom connector in your AI client, then log in to Pleo and approve.
- Check that a Pleo admin has enabled Pleo MCP access for your entity.
- In Claude, open Customize › Connectors. If your Owner has already added Pleo, find it and skip to the last step.
- Click Add custom connector, name it Pleo and enter https://mcp.pleo.io/mcp. Pleo says no Advanced or Auth settings are needed.
- Click Connect on the Pleo connector, log in to Pleo if prompted and click Approve. Then set write tools to Needs approval.
Pleo isn't in Claude's connector directory, per Pleo, so searching there won't find it. Pleo says Claude for Work admins may restrict who can add their own custom connectors. For receipt uploads on Team/Enterprise, an Owner allows network egress to specific domains under Organization settings › Capabilities and adds only mcp.pleo.io; Pleo says *.pleo.io also works, but mcp.pleo.io is all the upload needs.
What should a finance team watch for?
This server changes and approves expenses, so keep write tools on manual approval and decide which entities switch it on.
- Writes apply straight to the expense, with no documented draft step, and approvals and exports move expenses toward your books. Pleo says Claude and ChatGPT ask before writes by default. The risk is someone switching to always-allow. In Claude, set write tools to Needs approval, as Pleo recommends. In a ChatGPT workspace, Pleo recommends Use workspace default for approvals, warns against Allow all actions, and suggests choosing how new actions are handled (for example Only enable new read actions).
- Expense notes, merchant names and receipts are untrusted text. An injected instruction could push the agent to approve, recode or queue expenses for export, so keep human approval on.
- Access is on or off per entity and follows each user's role, so a spender and a bookkeeper get different results.
- Receipts are capped at 5 MB. If mcp.pleo.io isn't on your client's allowed domains, uploads fall back to the MCP connection and use much more model context, per Pleo.
- Pleo says your AI provider processes expense data, including colleagues' names, under its own terms, possibly outside the UK or EU, and Pleo can access data sent through its MCP tools. Read both sets of terms.
- Pleo publishes no rate limits or beta status. To revoke, use My Account › Security and Devices › MCP Connections in Pleo, or disconnect in your AI client.
How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?
It suits month-end expense clean-up: finding gaps, proposing coding and queuing exports, with a person confirming each change in the AI client.
Inside a company
- List every expense blocking month-end (missing receipts, categories or approvals) and who holds each one.
- Propose consistent category and VAT coding for a vendor's expenses, then approve each update before it's applied.
- Match receipts from a connected inbox to expenses and attach them after you check the amounts (only where your email connector can fetch the attachment, per Pleo).
- Show export-ready expenses and add them to the export queue once the finance lead confirms.
At an accounting firm
- For a client entity your Pleo login can access, summarise what's still incomplete before the close call.
- Scan a client's recent expenses for likely miscoding and list fixes for review.
- Draft reminders to the client's approvers with the most outstanding items (sending needs another tool).
- Check a client's VAT coding against its receipts and list proposed corrections for the bookkeeper to approve.
Keep a person approving every update, approval and export. Each one changes Pleo and what reaches the ledger.

FAQ
Is this official?
Yes. Pleo hosts the server at mcp.pleo.io and documents it on its developer site. It isn't in Claude's connector directory, so add it as a custom connector.
Is it free?
Pleo says it's included with eligible Pleo pricing plans at no extra charge, but doesn't list the plans. You also need an AI client plan that allows custom connectors.
Does it change data in Pleo?
Yes. It updates expenses, approves or rejects them and adds them to the export queue. Pleo says it can't make payments or change company setup.
Is my data used to train models?
Pleo's MCP pages don't address training. Pleo says your AI provider processes the data under its own terms, so read Pleo's privacy policy and your AI provider's terms.
Can my accountant use it on my behalf?
Pleo doesn't document accountant access. The agent acts with the signed-in user's own Pleo permissions, so an accountant would connect with their own Pleo login, on an entity where MCP access is on.
