Puzzle MCP server: what it reads, what it can change, and how to connect it to Claude or ChatGPT
Puzzle hosts one MCP server at app.puzzle.io/mcp: read-only by default, with opt-in Beta write access that asks you to confirm each change. OAuth sign-in. Verified 21 Oct 2026.
- Official MCP server · read, opt-in write in Beta (hosted)
- Hosting
- Remote HTTP, hosted by Puzzle: https://app.puzzle.io/mcp. No local server and no Claude or ChatGPT directory listing found.
- Auth
- OAuth sign-in with your Puzzle account; you pick which companies the connection covers. The server's OAuth metadata lists one scope, mcp, with bearer tokens in a header.
- Read / write
- Read-only by default. Write access is a Beta you switch on per connection after accepting a disclaimer; Puzzle says the assistant confirms each change before making it.
- Works with
- Claude.ai (any plan, per Puzzle), Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, any MCP client
- Plan requirement
- Any Puzzle customer, per Puzzle. There is no separate MCP price, so the cost is your Puzzle plan. Free-plan companies get every tool for a grace period after first connecting (or until the free trial ends, if later), then a reduced read-only set; upgrading under Settings › Billing restores the full set.

What can an agent do with Puzzle through MCP?
An agent can read a company's statements, ledger and metrics. Once you enable Beta write access, it can also categorise transactions, create bills, invoices and journal entries, and reconcile accounts.
Puzzle doesn't publish a named tool list or a tool count. It describes data areas and actions instead.
What it can read
- The balance sheet, income statement, trial balance and cash activity
- Transactions, journal entries and the chart of accounts
- Invoices, bills, vendors and customers
- Payroll, classes and departments
- The monthly checklist
- Several metric sets (revenue, expense, spending, employee, categorisation)
Good to know
- Puzzle's marketing page calls the server alpha. The help centre calls write access a Beta.
- Puzzle doesn't document whether bills, invoices and journal entries created by the agent post to the books at once or stay as drafts. Treat a confirmed change as a live change to the ledger.
Can
- Answer questions on runway, burn, spending and revenue across the companies you connect
- Pull the balance sheet, income statement, trial balance and cash activity
- Search transactions, journal entries, invoices, bills, vendors, customers and payroll data
- Categorise transactions (write access on, confirmed per change)
- Create bills, invoices and journal entries (write access on, confirmed per change)
- Reconcile accounts (write access on, confirmed per change)
Cannot
- Change anything while the connection's Read-only switch is on, which is the default (per Puzzle)
- Read or change a company's books while AI is turned off for that company (per Puzzle)
- Use write tools on a free-plan company after its grace period ends, until it upgrades under Settings › Billing (per Puzzle)
What access does it get?
Each connection acts as one Puzzle user, limited to the companies you tick at sign-in and to read-only unless you turn on write access for that connection.
| Where | Scopes and permissions (as documented) | Admin requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Puzzle MCP server (app.puzzle.io/mcp) | OAuth scope mcp, per the server's published metadata; Puzzle's docs name no finer scopes. The consent screen lists your companies and a Read-only switch that is on by default. A consent screen that says "Read company data" means you reached the partner API instead, per Puzzle. | You need Full or Partial access to each company, and AI must be on for it: someone at that company opens Chat in Puzzle and clicks Allow on the "Enable a Smarter Puzzle" dialog, or turns it on under Settings › AI accounting, per Puzzle. An accountant connecting client companies may need the client to do this. Change companies or turn write access off under Settings › Connected apps; to revoke the connection, remove it there and in your AI client. |
How do I connect it?
Every client uses the same URL, https://app.puzzle.io/mcp. You then sign in to Puzzle, choose companies, and leave Read-only on unless you need changes.
- Open Customize › Connectors (claude.ai/customize/connectors), click +, then Add custom connector.
- Name it Puzzle MCP and enter https://app.puzzle.io/mcp.
- Sign in to Puzzle, tick only the companies this connection needs, keep the Read-only switch on, and click Allow.
- Start a new conversation. Claude Desktop uses the same connector settings.
Puzzle says any Claude.ai plan works. Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds custom connectors and may restrict which MCP servers Claude Code can use.
What should a finance team watch for?
Each connection has a Read-only switch. Leave it on until you have a clear reason for agent changes and someone to review them.
- Write access is Beta and covers categorisation, new bills, invoices and journal entries, and reconciliation. Puzzle doesn't say whether created items post at once or stay as drafts, so treat each confirmed change as live.
- Puzzle documents no tool that pays a bill, sends an invoice or moves money. Bill creation still feeds your payables, so review new bills before any payment run.
- Per Puzzle, asking the assistant to make a change is one of three ways to switch write access on, and a disclaimer appears first. The agent can trigger that request, so an injected instruction could make it ask for write access. Accept the disclaimer only when you started the request. Otherwise, turn write access on yourself under Settings › Connected apps.
- Transaction descriptions, memos and vendor names are free text. An injected instruction could push the agent to categorise, create entries or reconcile, so keep confirmation on and read each proposed change.
- Sessions: the help centre says the connection stays signed in if used at least once every 30 days; Puzzle's marketing page still says it re-authenticates every 5 days.
- Usage is rate limited, per Puzzle, with no published numbers; Puzzle's API/MCP page says to contact support@puzzle.io if you hit the limits.
- Puzzle says data is encrypted with AES-256 and not sold or shared with third parties; its MCP pages and privacy policy say nothing on AI training. Check Puzzle's terms and your AI provider's terms.
How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?
Use the read tools for reporting and questions. The Beta write tools fit drafting and clean-up work, with a person confirming each change.
Inside a company
- Ask for this quarter's income statement, burn trend or runway without exporting reports.
- List top vendors by spend and unpaid bills before a cash meeting.
- Propose categories for uncategorised transactions and confirm each one before it applies.
- Have the agent propose an accrual journal entry for the controller to check; once confirmed, treat it as posted.
At an accounting firm
- Connect several client companies in one sign-in and compare their monthly results before reviews.
- Walk a client's monthly checklist and list what is still open at month-end.
- Have the agent prepare reconciliations and a reviewer confirm each one.
- Keep most client connections read-only and enable write access only where a reviewer is assigned.
Whatever the use, keep a person confirming anything that changes the ledger, and treat AI-produced figures as drafts until they tie to Puzzle's own reports.

FAQ
Is this official?
Yes. Puzzle hosts the server and documents it on puzzle.io/api-mcp and in its help centre. It isn't listed in the Claude or ChatGPT directories, so you add it as a custom connector.
Is it free?
Puzzle says MCP is available to any Puzzle customer and doesn't publish a separate MCP price, so the cost is your Puzzle plan. Free-plan companies keep every tool for a grace period after first connecting (or until the free trial ends, if later), then drop to a reduced read-only set.
Does it change data in Puzzle?
Only if you enable Beta write access for a connection. It can then categorise transactions, create bills, invoices and journal entries, and reconcile accounts, asking you to confirm each change.
Is my data used to train models?
Puzzle's MCP pages and privacy policy don't address training. Puzzle says it doesn't sell or share your information with third parties. Check Puzzle's terms and your AI provider's terms.
Can my accountant use it on my behalf?
Puzzle says you can connect one, several or all companies you manage. It doesn't address accountants specifically; anyone with Full or Partial access to a company can select it at sign-in, per Puzzle.
