Recurly Compass MCP server: what it reads, what it can't touch, how to connect

What can an agent do with Recurly through MCP?

An agent can search Recurly's documentation and its API reference through 2 tools; it cannot look up or change anything in your Recurly site.

Where it runs

Recurly describes two agents behind one URL. You can enable either or both.

AgentToolWhat it does
Knowledge Agentdocs_searchSearches Recurly's documentation to answer product questions.
Coding Agentapi_reference_searchReturns code examples, parameter references and client library guidance.

Account records

  • Recurly describes both tools as documentation and API-reference search, listed as Public access.
  • It documents no tool that reads or writes account records.
  • On that basis there is no documented write path: no tool posts, drafts, charges or refunds.

Code the agent writes

This is a separate matter. If you run that code against the Recurly API with your own key, it can change live data, and it runs outside the MCP server.

Can

  • Search Recurly's product documentation and answer how-to questions (docs_search)
  • Return API code examples, parameter references and library guidance (api_reference_search)
  • Explain settings such as dunning, invoicing or revenue recognition as Recurly documents them

Cannot

  • Read customer, subscription, invoice or transaction data: Recurly documents only documentation and API-reference search tools
  • Create, change or delete anything in Recurly; no write tools are documented
  • Stay connected past 30 days without signing in again (per Recurly)

What access does it get?

It gets a token from your Recurly login for two documentation tools; Recurly documents no tool that reaches account data. The server's OAuth metadata lists one scope, mcp:tools.

WhereScopes and permissions (as documented)Admin requirement
Compass Public MCP Server (remote, https://mcp.recurly.com/mcp)mcp:tools (the only scope in the server's published OAuth metadata); token sent as a Bearer header; expires after 30 days. Recurly's docs page names no scopes.During early access, the user needs permissions within a Recurly site that has the MCP feature flag enabled. Recurly doesn't document which roles qualify.

How do I connect it?

Add https://mcp.recurly.com/mcp as a remote server in your MCP client and sign in to Recurly when prompted; Recurly documents the steps for Claude Code and Cursor.

  1. There is no Recurly listing in the Claude connector directory, so go to Customize › Connectors › Add custom connector.
  2. Enter https://mcp.recurly.com/mcp as the URL, then sign in to Recurly when asked.

Recurly doesn't document Claude.ai or Claude Desktop setup; this is Claude's standard custom-connector route. Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds custom connectors.

What should a finance team watch for?

The main limit is scope. The server searches Recurly's documentation and has no access to your billing data. It is also still in early access.

  • Early access only: you need a site with the MCP feature flag enabled. Recurly says the server will be on all subscription plans at general release but gives no date.
  • Tokens expire after 30 days, so connections drop and need a fresh sign-in. Recurly doesn't document how to revoke a token early; its OAuth server publishes a revocation endpoint but no user-facing steps.
  • Recurly's Cursor examples put both tools in autoApprove, which skips confirmation. That is low risk for documentation search, but don't copy the pattern to servers that can write.
  • Code from the Coding Agent can create charges, credits or refunds if you run it with a live API key. Review it, and test on a sandbox site with a key limited to what the script needs. Keep that API key out of source files and shared configs; use an environment variable or a secrets manager. Treat the agent's code and documentation answers as untrusted input until a person has checked them.
  • Third-party servers from Composio and StackOne reach Recurly account data; StackOne lists actions such as Refund Invoice, Create Purchase and Collect Invoice. They are not Recurly's and are not reviewed here.
  • Recurly's MCP page makes no data-retention or training statement; read Recurly's privacy terms and your AI provider's terms.

How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?

Because it only searches documentation, it suits questions about how Recurly works and help writing reporting code. It can't answer questions from your live numbers.

Inside a company

  • Ask how Recurly handles proration, credits or dunning before changing a plan setting.
  • Check how Recurly documents revenue recognition settings while preparing a close checklist.
  • Have the agent draft a read-only API script that exports invoices for a period, for an engineer to review and run.
  • Look up which API fields hold tax and discount amounts when mapping Recurly to the ledger.

At an accounting firm

  • Get up to speed on a new client's billing system by asking how Recurly structures plans, add-ons and invoices.
  • Draft a reconciliation script that pulls Recurly transactions by date, run by the client with a restricted key.
  • Confirm what a Recurly report or export contains before relying on it in a revenue review.
  • Find the documented steps for a configuration change and send them to the client to carry out.

Whatever the use, a person reviews any code before it runs against Recurly and approves anything that changes Recurly or the ledger.

FAQ

Is this official?

Yes. Recurly hosts the Compass MCP server at mcp.recurly.com and documents it. Composio and StackOne servers for Recurly are third-party.

Is it free?

Recurly doesn't list a separate charge, and doesn't say whether early access or general release costs extra. It is early access now; Recurly says it will be on all subscription plans at general release.

Does it change data in Recurly?

Recurly documents no write tools. Its two tools search documentation and the API reference, and Recurly documents no tool that reads your account data either.

Is my data used to train models?

Recurly's MCP page doesn't say. Check Recurly's privacy terms and your AI provider's terms on training and retention.

Can my accountant use it on my behalf?

Recurly doesn't address this. It needs a Recurly login; since it only searches documentation, there is no client data for an accountant to reach through it.
