Sequence MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT: what it does, access, how to connect

Sequence runs a hosted, read-only MCP server (OAuth 2.0) covering 12 billing data areas plus revenue reports. It is a Labs feature and is off by default. Verified 21 Oct 2026.

  • Official MCP serverOfficial remote MCP · read-only
Hosting
Remote, hosted by Sequence at https://mcp.sequencehq.com/mcp, per the setup prompt on Sequence's MCP product page. Sequence's docs don't list the URL. No local or open-source server.
Auth
OAuth 2.0: you sign in with your Sequence account when the client prompts. Each tool wraps an existing Sequence API endpoint, per Sequence.
Read / write
Read-only today, per Sequence's docs. Write use cases are in design and Sequence says they will ship with human review in front of any write.
Works with
Claude.ai and Claude Desktop (steps in Sequence's docs). Sequence's changelog says it also works in ChatGPT and names Cursor. Claude Code and ChatGPT can add the server URL using each client's standard steps; Sequence publishes no steps for them.
Plan requirement
Sequence customer with Sequence Labs and the MCP server switched on by an admin. Sequence says Labs projects go to a small group of customers first. No MCP price published.

What can an agent do with Sequence through MCP?

An agent can look up and summarise your Sequence billing data across 12 object areas. It can also report invoiced revenue and outstanding invoices. It cannot change anything.

Sequence's docs list coverage for customers, invoices, credit notes, billing schedules, products, quotes, usage, taxes, collections, account, activity stream and notifications. They say the assistant pages through results for you. Sequence doesn't publish a tool list or tool count.

Writes

  • There is no write path today. The docs say the server is "read-only as it stands" (Sequence MCP docs), so no tool posts, drafts, sends or moves money.
  • Sequence's product page also mentions drafting invoices. The docs, which are more specific, list writes only as planned.

Can

  • List customers and read a customer's billing schedule
  • Read invoices and credit notes, and find invoices stuck in draft
  • Report invoiced revenue and the outstanding invoice total
  • Read products, quotes, usage, taxes and collections data
  • Read the account activity stream and notifications

Cannot

  • Create, edit, send or void anything: the server is read-only, per Sequence's docs
  • Make agent-driven record changes yet; Sequence says these are in design and will sit behind human review
  • Authenticate unless both Labs toggles are on in Sequence, per Sequence

What access does it get?

Read access to the Sequence account you sign in to over OAuth 2.0; Sequence doesn't publish scope names.

WhereScopes and permissions (as documented)Admin requirement
Sequence MCP server (remote, OAuth 2.0)Not documented by the vendor. Sequence says each tool wraps an existing API endpoint and that the server is read-only, so the reach is read access to the objects listed above for the account you authenticate with.A Sequence admin must turn on Enable Sequence Labs and the MCP server under Settings > Labs, per Sequence. Sequence doesn't document which user roles can then authorise. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds connectors for the organisation.

How do I connect it?

Have a Sequence admin switch on Labs and the MCP server, then add Sequence in Claude under Settings > Connectors and sign in. Sequence's docs cover only Claude; other clients use the server URL from Sequence's product page.

  1. In the Sequence dashboard, a Sequence admin opens Settings > Labs and turns on Enable Sequence Labs.
  2. Under MCP server, turn it on. Sequence lists Enable AR agent as optional. It is a separate agent that acts on customer billing requests sent by email, with human review, per Sequence, so leave it off if you only want the MCP server.
  3. In Claude, go to Settings > Connectors, browse or search for Sequence, add it and sign in with your Sequence account, per Sequence's docs. Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds it first.
  4. If Sequence doesn't appear in the list, add a custom connector with https://mcp.sequencehq.com/mcp (the URL on Sequence's product page) and sign in.
  5. Ask in plain language, for example for customers with outstanding invoices.

No public Claude directory page for Sequence resolved on 21 Oct 2026, so we couldn't confirm the listing. Desktop uses the same account connectors.

What should a finance team watch for?

It is an early-access Labs feature and starts switched off. It is read-only, and Sequence's docs give setup steps only for Claude.

  • Off by default: if Enable Sequence Labs and the MCP server are not both on, the connector won't authenticate even after you add it in Claude, per Sequence.
  • Early access: Sequence says Labs projects are prototypes released to a small group of customers first, and some may never leave Labs. Expect changes.
  • Sequence publishes no tool list, scope names, rate limits or row caps, and doesn't describe how the assistant pages through results. For large pulls, such as a full period's invoices for a reconciliation, check the record count against the Sequence dashboard before relying on totals. Sequence's product page and docs differ on drafting invoices; rely on the docs (read-only) and confirm with Sequence.
  • Read-only limits the damage, but customer names, notes and activity text come back as free text. Treat answers as drafts and check totals against Sequence's own reports.
  • When write tools arrive, an instruction hidden in a customer note or invoice memo could push an agent to change records, so keep the human review Sequence describes switched on.
  • Sequence's MCP docs say nothing about data retention or model training. Check Sequence's terms and data processing agreement and your AI provider's policies.

How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?

The server only reads, so the uses below are questions, reporting and review prep. Any change to billing records is made in Sequence itself.

Inside a company

  • Ask for the outstanding invoice total and a list of customers with overdue invoices before a collections meeting.
  • Pull invoiced revenue (billings) for the month and compare it with the billings figure in the board pack draft. Sequence's report shows amounts invoiced, which differs from recognised revenue.
  • Find invoices stuck in draft before a billing run (an example prompt on Sequence's product page), then fix them in Sequence.
  • Summarise one customer's billing schedule, quotes and credit notes ahead of a renewal call.

At an accounting firm

  • Prepare a client review with billings (invoiced revenue), receivables and credit notes from the client's Sequence account.
  • Pull invoices and credit notes for a period to support a revenue or receivables reconciliation.
  • Check usage and tax data on a sample of invoices as preparation for a manager's review.
  • Confirm with the client that their Sequence admin has enabled Labs, since the connection fails otherwise.

Nothing can change Sequence records through MCP today. If Sequence adds writes, keep a person approving every change. Treat AI summaries as drafts until they tie to Sequence's reports.

FAQ

Is this official?

Yes. Sequence hosts the server and documents it under Sequence Labs at docs.sequencehq.com/labs/mcp. There is no open-source version.

Is it free?

Sequence publishes no separate MCP price. It is part of Sequence Labs for Sequence customers, and Sequence says Labs features go to a small group first. Your AI client plan applies too.

Does it change data in Sequence?

No. Sequence's docs say the server is read-only today. Write use cases are in design, and Sequence says they will ship with human review in front of any write.

Is my data used to train models?

Sequence's MCP docs don't address this. Check Sequence's privacy terms and data processing agreement, and your AI provider's training and retention policies.

Can my accountant use it on my behalf?

Sequence doesn't document this. The connection uses the Sequence account of whoever signs in, so an accountant would need their own access to your Sequence account, with Labs enabled.
