TaxJar and Stripe Tax with Claude and ChatGPT: the Stripe MCP server, what it reaches and how to connect

TaxJar has no official MCP server. Stripe's hosted server (mcp.stripe.com, OAuth or agent keys) reads and writes Stripe Tax objects through generic API tools. Verified 21 Oct 2026.

This page covers Stripe Tax through Stripe's MCP server. The standalone TaxJar product and API are not part of it.
  • Official MCP serverOfficial Stripe remote MCP (covers Stripe Tax) · read & write
  • Official Claude or ChatGPT connectorOfficial Stripe connector in Claude · read & write
Hosting
Remote HTTP only, hosted by Stripe at https://mcp.stripe.com. Stripe documents no local server on its MCP page.
Auth
OAuth for interactive clients acting as your Stripe user; agent API keys (restricted keys tagged Agent) sent as a bearer token for clients that can't use OAuth.
Read / write
Read and write. stripe_api_read runs any supported GET method; stripe_api_write runs POST, PATCH, PUT and DELETE methods, including tax settings and registrations.
Works with
Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and other remote MCP clients, per Stripe.
Plan requirement
A Stripe account; tax objects need Stripe Tax set up. Stripe's MCP docs don't mention a price.

What can an agent do with Stripe Tax through MCP?

It can read and change Stripe Tax settings, list tax codes, list and create tax registrations, and create tax calculations, None of Stripe's named tools is specific to tax. The work runs through the two generic API tools.

Where it runs

OptionTools
Stripe's MCP page15 named tools. Four are generic API tools: search methods, method details, read (any supported GET) and write (any supported POST, PATCH, PUT or DELETE). Stripe's supported-methods list includes 11 tax methods across settings, tax codes, registrations and calculations.
Claude's directory listingA different set of 11 tools, including manage_stripe_accounts, which isn't in Stripe's table.

How writes behave

AccessWhat happens
OAuthA write takes effect when the call runs. There is no draft step.
Agent keyStripe's default approval rules cover payouts, refunds and account configuration changes, which wait for a designated reviewer. Stripe doesn't say whether tax settings count as account configuration.
Your user credentialsStripe says some writes, such as refunds and outbound payments, need a person to approve through a link that expires after 24 hours. Stripe doesn't list them all, and it doesn't say whether the Treasury tools are covered.

Money

  • The same write tool reaches invoices, subscriptions, refunds and payment links.
  • Finalising an invoice or creating a subscription can charge a customer's card on file when collection is automatic, per Stripe's API reference.
  • Five Treasury tools are in public preview. send_money and transfer_money move money, convert_currency also moves funds, and setup_recipient creates payees.

Good to know

  • atlas_company_formation can start or resume a Delaware C corporation or LLC formation through Stripe Atlas. Keep it off unless you need it.
  • Check the tool list in your client before you enable the connector, because that list is what you actually get.

Can

  • Read tax settings, tax codes and tax registrations (read)
  • Create a tax calculation for a hypothetical order and read its line items (this writes a calculation object and records no sale)
  • Update tax settings (write; immediate with OAuth; with an agent key, Stripe's default approval rules may hold account configuration changes for a reviewer, and Stripe doesn't say whether this covers tax)
  • Create or update tax registrations, which tell Stripe Tax where you are registered (write; immediate with OAuth; with an agent key, Stripe's default approval rules may hold account configuration changes for a reviewer, and Stripe doesn't say whether this covers tax)
  • Read invoices, credit notes, balance transactions and payouts to check tax on billed amounts (read)

Cannot

  • Reach the standalone TaxJar product or its API; Stripe's MCP covers Stripe Tax only
  • Record tax transactions, file returns or remit tax: none of these methods is in Stripe's supported-methods list for MCP (Stripe's tool table describes the write tool more broadly, so check stripe_api_search in your client)
  • Refund or send outbound payments with your user credentials (OAuth) without a person approving through Stripe's confirmation link, per Stripe; Stripe gives these only as examples and doesn't say whether the Treasury tools are covered. For agent keys, Stripe uses approval rules with a designated reviewer
  • Use OAuth for Connect connected accounts; Stripe requires a platform agent key and the Stripe-Account header

What access does it get?

Whatever you grant on Stripe's OAuth consent page, per account or sandbox, or the permissions on the agent key you create. Admins can switch MCP access off for the whole team.

WhereScopes and permissions (as documented)Admin requirement
Stripe MCP server, OAuth (remote)Stripe doesn't publish scope names. On the consent page you pick one or more live accounts or sandboxes and set permissions for each environment. Grant a sandbox first, and give the live account the narrowest permissions the consent page offers; Stripe doesn't document a read-only option.Stripe administrators can turn MCP access on or off for the team, separately for live mode and sandboxes. Stripe doesn't say which roles may authorise a client. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds the connector first.
Stripe MCP server, agent API key (remote)A restricted key tagged Agent, with permissions you set when creating it. Stripe applies default approval rules to agent keys for payouts, refunds and account configuration changes. Full-access and untagged restricted keys stop working for MCP in December 2026.Created on the Dashboard API keys page. Connect platforms use a platform agent key with only the connected-account permissions needed.

How do I connect it?

Add https://mcp.stripe.com in your AI client, or install Stripe's listed connector in Claude or plugin in ChatGPT, then sign in to Stripe and grant permissions.

  1. Open the Stripe listing in Claude's connector directory and select Connect to Claude (or Add to Claude).
  2. Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds the connector to the workspace first.
  3. Sign in to Stripe, choose the account or sandbox, set its permissions and approve.
  4. In a conversation, open + › Connectors and switch Stripe on.

Stripe says the same connector works in Claude Desktop. Listing: https://claude.com/connectors/stripe

What should a finance team watch for?

One write tool reaches much of the Stripe API. Writes take effect when the call runs unless a Stripe confirmation or approval rule applies, and Stripe doesn't list every action those rules cover.

  • stripe_api_write can update tax settings and registrations, void invoices, cancel subscriptions and create payment links, with no draft step. atlas_company_formation can start a Delaware company formation through Stripe Atlas; keep it off unless you need it. Turn on your client's tool-approval setting, as Stripe advises.
  • Money can move: with OAuth, refunds and outbound payments wait for Stripe's approval link. The preview Treasury tools send_money, transfer_money and convert_currency move funds and setup_recipient creates payees; Stripe doesn't say whether they need confirmation. Finalising an invoice or creating a subscription can charge a customer's card on file.
  • Customer names, invoice memos and descriptions are free text. An injected instruction there could push the agent to refund, void or change a registration, so keep human approval on, as Stripe advises.
  • Key deadline: move to agent keys or OAuth by 30 November 2026; from December other keys get a 401.
  • Agent keys: keep them in an environment variable or secrets store. Don't put them in a committed .mcp.json or config file, per Stripe's key guidance (Claude Code reads ${AGENT_API_KEY} from your shell; Codex uses bearer_token_env_var). Stripe recommends an access policy (IP, ASN or country) on every live key. When you replace a key, Stripe recommends testing in a sandbox first and then expiring the old one.
  • Revoking access: authorised clients appear under OAuth sessions in your Stripe user settings, where you can revoke them. Stripe logs MCP tool calls in Workbench (Logs › MCP tool calls), with each call's status, arguments and response. A user whose role can manage team members, such as Administrator, can revoke other users' sessions under Team and security, only for the account and environment being viewed. On managed networks, IT may need to allow mcp.stripe.com, per Stripe.
  • Stripe's MCP page publishes no rate limits or data-retention terms; read Stripe's and your AI provider's terms first.

How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?

Reads suit tax-setup reviews and questions about billed tax; writes suit registration and settings changes that a person reviews first.

Inside a company

  • List current Stripe Tax registrations and compare them with the states or countries where you have filed or plan to register.
  • Estimate tax on a planned price or customer location with a tax calculation, without creating a sale. Stripe calculates tax only where you have an active registration in Stripe, so treat the result as an estimate. It isn't a determination of what you owe.
  • Pull invoices and credit notes for a month to check tax amounts before close.
  • Draft a new tax registration for a person to approve in the client before it is created.

At an accounting firm

  • Review a client's Stripe Tax settings and registrations before a nexus or registration conversation.
  • Summarise tax on a client's invoices for a period through a live-mode grant with the narrowest permissions the consent page offers (Stripe doesn't document a read-only option); use a sandbox only to try registration or settings changes.
  • Point clients still on standalone TaxJar to its own API or a Zapier route, since Stripe's MCP doesn't reach it (per Zapier, each successful tool call uses two tasks from your Zapier plan, and address validation needs TaxJar Professional or higher).

Whatever the use, keep a person approving anything that changes Stripe, and treat AI summaries as drafts until they tie to Stripe's reports.

FAQ

Is this official?

The Stripe MCP server is official and hosted by Stripe, and Claude's directory lists the connector as made by Stripe. TaxJar itself has no official MCP server.

Is it free?

Stripe's MCP docs don't mention a price. Stripe Tax, and Sigma for natural-language SQL in stripe_analytics, are priced by Stripe; see Stripe's pricing page for Stripe Tax and Sigma.

Does it change data in Stripe?

Yes, if the permissions you grant allow writes. Tax settings and registrations change when the call runs, unless a Stripe approval rule applies to an agent key; Stripe doesn't say whether tax settings count as account configuration. Stripe says some writes made with your user credentials, such as refunds and outbound payments, need a person to approve through a link that expires after 24 hours; Stripe doesn't list them all, and it doesn't say whether the Treasury tools are covered.

Is my data used to train models?

Stripe's MCP docs don't address this. Check Stripe's terms and your AI provider's training and retention policies before connecting.

Can my accountant use it on my behalf?

Stripe doesn't document this for MCP. Stripe says OAuth acts on behalf of the Stripe user who signs in, so check with Stripe how an outside accountant's own Dashboard access would apply.
