Zip MCP: what the procurement MCP server does, what it can reach, how to connect
Zip hosts an official MCP server and says it exposes 50+ native Zip actions, with OAuth scoped to each user. Reads documented, writes unconfirmed. Verified 21 Oct 2026.
- Official MCP server · read (writes unconfirmed), hosted
- Hosting
- Remote, hosted by Zip. Zip doesn't publish the server URL on its product page; it links a help-centre article we could not open. No local server.
- Auth
- OAuth. Zip says every query is authenticated via OAuth and scoped to the signed-in user's Zip permissions.
- Read / write
- Read is documented: request status, preferred vendors, reporting across requests, invoices and payments. Zip's launch says Zip can offer a request submission from a chat, but Zip names no tool that writes.
- Works with
- Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini are named by Zip, plus any MCP-compatible assistant
- Plan requirement
- Per Zip's June 2026 press release, included with all core Zip products; confirm with Zip. The current product page states no plan or price.
- Last changed

What can an agent do with Zip through MCP?
Mainly look things up: Zip says the server connects an AI assistant to 50+ native Zip actions covering intake to pay, and its public examples are searches and reports.
What Zip describes
| Source | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Zip's product page | Three jobs: finding any open request in plain language with its status, blockers and next steps; showing preferred vendors at intake; and aggregated analysis across requests. |
| Zip's launch blog | Reporting across suppliers, requests, invoices and payments. It also says Zip can offer a request submission from a chat during vendor research. |
Good to know
- Zip does not publish the action list. So whether any action creates, edits or approves records is not documented.
- Zip says every action leaves an audit trail and runs inside its compliance controls.
Can
- Search open requests in natural language and return status, blockers and next steps (per Zip)
- Show preferred vendors when someone starts an intake request (per Zip)
- Report across suppliers, requests, invoices and payments from one chat (per Zip's launch blog)
- Offer a request submission from a conversation, such as during vendor research (per Zip's launch blog; whether it submits anything is not documented)
Cannot
- Go beyond the signed-in user's Zip permissions; Zip says every query is scoped to them
- Run from a local machine; Zip documents only a hosted server
What access does it get?
The connection acts as one Zip user: Zip says each query is authenticated with OAuth and limited to that user's Zip permissions, and it publishes no scope names.
| Where | Scopes and permissions (as documented) | Admin requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Zip MCP (hosted) | Not documented by the vendor. Zip says access is scoped to the user's permissions in Zip. | Zip doesn't document an admin enablement step publicly; its help article, which we could not open, may describe a Zip-side setting. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds custom connectors. ChatGPT Business/Enterprise: an admin must enable developer mode and allow the custom MCP server. |
How do I connect it?
Get the server URL from Zip's MCP help article or your Zip team, then add it as a custom connector in your AI client; Zip says setup takes minutes. Zip's setup article was not publicly readable on 21 Oct 2026, so follow it where it differs from these steps.
- Get the Zip MCP server URL from Zip's help-centre article (linked from zip.com/products/mcp) or your Zip contact.
- Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds it under Customize › Connectors › Add custom connector.
- Individual plans: Customize › Connectors › Add custom connector, paste the URL, then Connect and sign in to Zip.
- Review the tool list Claude shows before first use, and keep tool approval on.
Zip has no listing in the Claude connector directory as of 21 Oct 2026.
What should a finance team watch for?
The main gap is documentation: Zip's public pages don't list the 50+ actions, so check the live tool list for anything that writes before you rely on it.
- Zip doesn't publish the action list. Its launch says Zip can offer a request submission from a chat, but Zip names no tool that writes, and its product page only shows lookups. Inspect the tools your client shows and disable any that create, submit or approve.
- Third-party Zip MCP servers exist: Truto hosts one built on Zip's API, and Gumloop lists a Zip connector. An open-source project also named zip-mcp compresses files and has nothing to do with Zip. Use only the URL from Zip's help article or Zip support, and don't give Zip credentials to a third-party server.
- Zip launched the server in beta in June 2026 and said it would reach general availability in summer 2026 (per its press release). The product page no longer says beta; confirm status with Zip.
- Request descriptions, vendor notes and invoice text are free text. If write tools exist, an injected instruction in one could push an agent to submit or approve something, so keep human approval on.
- Zip says every action leaves an audit trail and respects user permissions. Use a Zip account with the narrowest role that does the job.
- Zip's MCP pages don't address data retention or model training. See Zip's trust page and privacy notice, and your AI provider's terms.
- Zip publishes no rate limits for the server.
How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?
The documented uses are questions and reporting on procurement data; any drafting should end with a person submitting or approving in Zip.
Inside a company
- Ask which purchase requests are stuck, who holds them and what is blocking each one.
- Check preferred vendors for a category before someone raises a new request.
- Summarise requests, invoices and payments by supplier for a monthly spend review.
- Prepare the facts for a budget-owner conversation about pending purchases.
At an accounting firm
- For a client using Zip, list open requests and invoices ahead of a month-end close call.
- Summarise supplier spend and payment status as one input to an accrual review, alongside your ledger and receiving records.
- Answer client staff questions on where a request sits, checked by a person.
- Pull supplier and invoice reporting for an AP process review.
Whatever the use, keep a person approving anything that changes Zip, your ledger or a payment.

FAQ
Is this official?
Yes. Zip built and hosts the server and documents it on zip.com/products/mcp. Zip calls it the first procurement-native implementation of MCP.
Is it free?
Zip's June 2026 press release said it is included with all core Zip products; confirm with Zip. The current product page states no price. You also need an AI client plan that allows custom connectors.
Does it change data in Zip?
Not documented publicly. Zip's launch says Zip can offer a request submission from a chat, but Zip names no tool that writes, and the product page only shows lookups and reporting. Check the tool list your client shows.
Is my data used to train models?
Zip's MCP pages don't say. Check Zip's trust page and privacy notice, and your AI provider's terms, before connecting.
Can my accountant use it on my behalf?
Zip doesn't document this. Zip says each query is scoped to the signed-in user's Zip permissions, so access depends on the Zip account the accountant signs in with. Check with Zip about guest or external users.
