What can an agent do with Zoho Books through MCP?

The Claude connector has 49 tools that read and change contacts, items, invoices, estimates, sales and purchase orders, expenses, customer payments and taxes.

The Claude directory lists 11 get, 11 list, 9 create, 9 update and 9 delete tools.

How writes behave

  • Zoho doesn't document whether any create tool saves a draft, so treat every write as changing the books.
  • The expense tools change recorded spending.
  • create_customer_payment, update_customer_payment and delete_customer_payment change receipts recorded against invoices.
  • These writes and deletes, including delete_invoice and delete_expense, can change receivables balances and periods you have already reported.
  • Zoho doesn't document whether the connector respects your organisation's transaction locking, so reconcile after any agent session.

Sending invoices

  • Zoho's help page says the MCP can create and send invoices.
  • The Zoho Books create-invoice API has a send option that emails the invoice to the customer's contact persons.
  • Zoho doesn't document whether create_invoice or update_invoice uses it, so assume an invoice could reach a customer.

Money

  • No tool name approves or pays anything.
  • No tool moves money out of a bank account.

Not in the connector

  • Zoho's help page also names reconciling bank transactions and profit and loss summaries. Those tools aren't in the connector's list.
  • Zoho says other actions need a custom Zoho MCP server. Zoho MCP lets you build that server from the Zoho Books tools you pick.

Can

  • Read and list contacts, items, invoices, estimates, sales orders, purchase orders, expenses, customer payments, taxes, users and organisations (connector)
  • Create and update contacts, items, invoices, estimates, sales and purchase orders, expenses and taxes (connector)
  • Record, change and delete customer payments (connector)
  • Delete contacts, items, invoices, estimates, orders, expenses and taxes (connector)
  • Expose a chosen subset of Zoho Books tools, alone or with other Zoho apps, through your own server (Zoho MCP)

Cannot

  • Run actions outside the listed tools on the default connector; per Zoho these need a custom Zoho MCP server
  • Move money out of a bank account: no tool in the connector's list pays bills or makes transfers. Sending invoices is a different matter; Zoho says the MCP can send them (see above)
  • Act beyond the authorising user's own Zoho permissions (per Zoho's Zoho MCP page)

What access does it get?

The connector's OAuth metadata lists 36 supported scopes covering read, create, update and delete across the main Zoho Books records. They reach beyond the 49 tools, into banking, settings deletes and custom modules. A Zoho MCP server gets only the tools you add.

WhereScopes and permissions (as documented)Admin requirement
Claude connector (default)Listed as supported in the server's OAuth metadata: zohobooks.{contacts, customerpayments, estimates, expenses, invoices, purchaseorders, salesorders, settings}.{read, create, update, delete}, plus zohobooks.accountants.read, zohobooks.banking.read, zohobooks.custommodules.all and ZohoMCP.tool.execute. The metadata doesn't show which of these the sign-in screen requests. No tool among the 49 uses banking.read, accountants.read or custommodules.all. In the Zoho Books API the settings scopes cover taxes and items, which the tools use, and also users and organisation settings, which the tools read but don't create, update or delete. So a token could reach more than the tool list shows. You sign in to Zoho after choosing your data-centre region. The tool set is fixed.Zoho says to get approval from your organisation's admin before performing actions. Per Zoho's Zoho MCP page, agents act with the signed-in user's permissions; the Zoho Books help page doesn't say this for the default connector. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds the connector first.
Zoho MCP custom serverNot documented by the vendor as scope names. You choose which Zoho Books tools to add and authorise them with OAuth 2.1, either per user (Authorization on Demand, the default) or through shared Connections set up by the Super Admin. The account creator is Super Admin; collaborators get Admin or User roles (per Zoho). Zoho doesn't document a Zoho Books role requirement.

How do I connect it?

Use the Claude directory connector for the standard 49 tools. Build a Zoho MCP server when you want fewer tools or a client other than Claude.

  1. In Claude, open Customize › Connectors, click + and choose Browse connectors.
  2. Search for Zoho Books, select it and click Connect.
  3. Select the region where your Zoho account is hosted, click Continue and sign in to Zoho.
  4. Team/Enterprise: an Owner must add the connector first.

Read and write. Steps per Zoho's Zoho Books MCP help page.

What should a finance team watch for?

Delete, payment and invoice tools on the default connector, Zoho Books API limits of 100 requests a minute per organisation, and a secret embedded in Zoho MCP server URLs.

  • The default connector includes 9 delete tools and can record, change or delete customer payments. Zoho doesn't document a draft or confirmation step. In Claude, you can switch off tools you don't want, such as the delete and customer payment tools, from the Search and tools menu. Claude's help docs advise choosing Allow always only for tools you trust to run unsupervised, so keep write tools on approval. Or build a Zoho MCP server without them.
  • Zoho says the MCP can create and send invoices, and Zoho doesn't document whether create_invoice emails the customer. Approve invoice calls one at a time and check the invoice's status in Zoho Books afterwards.
  • Zoho says Zoho MCP uses your existing Zoho Books API quota. Zoho Books allows 100 requests a minute per organisation and 1,000 (Free) to 10,000 (Premium and above) a day.
  • A Zoho MCP server URL contains an API key; Zoho says to treat it like a password and regenerate it if exposed. Don't paste it into shared files or tickets.
  • For Zoho MCP servers you build, Zoho says every tool call is logged and logs are kept for 30 days. Zoho also says auditing is more accurate with per-user Authorization on Demand than with shared Connections. Zoho doesn't say whether this applies to the Claude default connector. Zoho's pages make no statement about model training; see Zoho's privacy policy and your AI provider's terms.
  • Invoice notes, item descriptions and contact fields return as free text. An injected instruction could push the agent to edit an invoice or delete a payment, so keep human approval on.

How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?

Questions about receivables, orders and expenses suit either the connector or a Zoho MCP server. For any change, the agent should propose it in chat and a person should approve the call, because Zoho doesn't document a draft step and each approved write saves to Zoho Books.

Inside a company

  • List unpaid invoices and outstanding amounts by customer to plan collections calls.
  • Have the agent propose invoice or estimate lines from a sales order in chat, approve each create call, then check the invoice's status in Zoho Books.
  • Summarise expenses by vendor or category for a budget review.
  • Clean up contact and item records, with each update approved in Claude first.

At an accounting firm

  • Review a client's open sales and purchase orders before a monthly meeting.
  • Check customer payments against invoices and flag mismatches for a person to fix.
  • Build a client-specific Zoho MCP server with read tools only for month-end questions.
  • Propose tax and item set-up changes in chat for a reviewer to approve before the agent applies them.

Keep a person approving anything that changes Zoho Books, and check AI-drafted figures against Zoho's own reports.

FAQ

Is this official?

Yes. The Claude directory lists the connector as made by Zoho and Anthropic verified, and Zoho MCP is Zoho's own product.

Is it free?

Zoho says Zoho MCP costs $0 for Zoho users and uses your Zoho Books API quota. You still need a Zoho Books organisation and a Claude or other AI client plan.

Does it change data in Zoho Books?

Yes. The connector can create, update and delete invoices, expenses, orders, contacts and customer payments, and Zoho says the MCP can send invoices. Zoho doesn't document a draft step, so keep approval on.

Is my data used to train models?

Zoho's MCP pages don't say. Check Zoho's privacy policy and your AI provider's terms. Zoho says Zoho MCP keeps tool-call logs for 30 days.

Can my accountant use it on my behalf?

Zoho doesn't address this or document accountant-specific access. Per Zoho, agents act with the signing-in user's permissions, so what an accountant could do would depend on their own user access in your Zoho Books organisation.
