Senior Accountant

Full-time
Remote (Canada)
Compensation: $70,000-$110,000CAD

About theFinanceStack

At theFinanceStack (tFS), we don't just offer a job, we offer a comprehensive learning experience. We partner with leading tech companies and innovative startups to provide a full range of finance and accounting services. Supported by industry-leading CFOs, we offer a unique opportunity to gain expertise in diverse areas of finance and accounting, including FP&A, accounting, capital raising, and more.

About the Role

We’re looking for a meticulous, proactive Senior Accountant who’s excited about where accounting is headed. In this role, you'll support multiple early-stage companies by leading month-end close, mentoring junior team members, and improving accounting processes—all while working with a team that’s exploring how AI and automation can unlock better insights, faster workflows, and more strategic finance.

If you’re energized by clean books and future-forward tools, we’d love to meet you.

What You'll Do

  • Own month-end close and prepare GAAP financial statements

  • Build and maintain working papers and variance analyses

  • Oversee payroll and compliance filings (GST/HST/PST)

  • Post journal entries, process AR/AP, and handle ad-hoc accounting tasks

  • Coach and mentor Jr Accountants to uphold quality and timeliness

  • Get hands-on when needed (especially for lean client accounts)

  • Manage multiple stakeholders across diverse industries, balancing expectations and delivering high-quality outputs

  • Bring an operational mindset to accounting—identify opportunities to streamline, automate, or add value for clients and for TheFinanceStack

  • Continuously learn by solving a wide range of accounting challenges across industries, contributing to your growth as a strategic finance partner

About You

Strategic, detail-oriented, and tech-curious, you’re a seasoned accounting professional who thrives on clean books, efficient systems, and high-quality reporting. You have deep experience with full-cycle accounting and are energized by the opportunity to elevate both client outcomes and team performance.

As our newest Senior Accountant, you’ll take ownership of the accounting function for several of our portfolio companies—leading month-end closes, preparing GAAP financials, overseeing payroll and compliance, and mentoring junior accountants. You’re equally comfortable getting into the weeds and zooming out to improve processes, identify automation opportunities, and bring strategic insight to finance operations.

Required Skills & Experience

  • CPA designation (or actively working toward one)

  • Strong grasp of full-cycle accounting and working papers

  • Experience running payroll (Rippling, Payworks, Wagepoint, etc.)

  • Proficiency with Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, etc.)

  • Familiarity with Canadian tax compliance (US knowledge a plus)

  • Experience with cloud-based accounting tools (Xero & QBO)

  • A curiosity for emerging tech in finance—including automation, AI tools, and how they can improve accuracy and speed

A Day in the Life

Your day starts with a scan through MissiveApp, where you triage client emails across your portfolio of companies. You spot a thread about a multi-element SaaS contract just signed by a client—you already flagged the rev rec risks when reviewing the draft, so you hop in and begin drafting a short revenue recognition memo, referencing ASC 606 to clarify treatment and prepare for any audit requirements. You loop in their founder to explain the implications on forward-looking margins and coordinate with their CRM team to make sure the billing structure gets reflected cleanly in the books.

Next, you turn to a stock-based compensation plan one client just rolled out. You’ve already built the journal entry template for expensing the RSUs using straight-line amortization, but you need to confirm the vesting cliff is coded correctly in their cap table software. While you’re at it, you fire up a quick Loom video explaining the impact of equity comp on their cash vs. GAAP earnings—turning a messy concept into a moment of client delight.

Before lunch, you host a weekly check-in with one of your junior accountants. They’ve got a few questions about reconciling intercompany transactions. You walk them through the process and suggest a Zapier automation to flag mismatches between entities going forward. You finish the meeting by reviewing their close checklist and coaching them to think not just about task completion—but about presenting information that drives decisions.

Afternoon rolls around and you shift gears into your systems hat. You notice one client’s AR aging is getting out of control. Rather than pinging the client for a manual process fix, you prototype a quick AI-based follow-up tool using a shared GPT prompt template and Notion API to nudge clients automatically. You test it, share a sample email, and within minutes the client’s COO replies: “Love this—can we do it across vendors too?”

Later, you finalize month-end reporting for a client expanding into multiple provinces. You’ve flagged some potential sales tax (SALT) exposure in BC and Quebec, so you prep a brief analysis with a recommendation to bring in a compliance partner for a full review. That level of foresight is why the client keeps renewing—and referring new business.

You wrap your day by scanning tomorrow’s calendar: one Controller shadow session, a 30-minute deep dive on AI-powered forecasting tools, and some time blocked to clean up your variance commentary in working papers. Before signing off, you leave notes for a junior team member, share a Slack post about an automation win, and log a few workflow ideas in our process improvement board.

You close the laptop knowing your clients are in good hands—and that you’re helping redefine what modern accounting should look like.
