What can an agent do with Ramp through MCP?

Through mcp.ramp.com an agent can query spend and take actions within the user's Ramp role: approve items, change cards and funds, draft and submit bills and, per Ramp's tool list, make purchases and move money.

Ramp says its tool reference holds 220 tools, shared by Ramp MCP and the Ramp CLI. The tools you see depend on your Ramp role and your client.

How actions behave

Per Ramp's tool descriptions:

ActionWhat happens
BillsCreated as drafts and submitted into approval. Ramp says bill tools never schedule or release a payment.
Approvals, card locks, limit increases and fund issuanceNo draft stage: they take effect when the agent runs them.
One-off fund issuanceBypasses approval flows.
PurchasesIssue payment credentials the agent can use straight away.

Who sees what

  • Employees see their own data.
  • Admin tools need admin or business-owner rights.

Can

  • Query spend, transactions, vendors, bills and accounting categories (100 rows per response) (remote)
  • Create a one-time receipt upload link for a person to use (remote)
  • Create, edit and submit draft bills into approval; create vendors (remote)
  • Approve or reject bills, reimbursements, transactions and requests where the user is the approver (remote)
  • Edit transaction memos and coding; mark items ready to sync to accounting (remote)
  • Lock cards, lift card locks and activate cards; raise card and fund limits; issue funds (remote)
  • Get Agent Card or Stripe MPP payment credentials; fund, pay from and withdraw an x402 wallet (remote)
  • Book flights and hotels; run sourcing events and procurement requests (remote)
  • Run read queries and load Ramp tables; the listing also shows clear_table and submit_feedback, which it doesn't explain (connector)

Cannot

  • Schedule or release bill payments, or edit payment details (per Ramp). An approval can still send a fully approved bill to payment; see cautions
  • Handle file uploads or downloads, per Ramp's connect guide; chat attachments don't reach Ramp. Its tool list does include a base64 receipt-upload tool Ramp says is designed for CLI callers
  • Return more than 100 rows in one query response (per Ramp)
  • Exceed the authorising user's Ramp role (per Ramp)
  • Complete step-up identity checks; Ramp says these return a link for a person to finish

What access does it get?

Each connection signs in as one Ramp user for one business, limited by that user's role, per Ramp; Ramp publishes no OAuth scope names.

WhereScopes and permissions (as documented)Admin requirement
Ramp MCP (mcp.ramp.com)Not documented by the vendor as named scopes. Browser OAuth as the signed-in user; admin tools need admin or business-owner rights. Custom clients and gateways need their exact redirect URI allowlisted.Ramp admins can limit who uses Ramp MCP by role, department or user: Company › Integrations › Ramp MCP › Manage Access. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds custom connectors.
Claude directory connector (ramp-mcp-remote.ramp.com)Not documented by the vendor. The listing says sign-in is required and describes read-only access.Ramp doesn't document whether Manage Access also covers this connector. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds it.
ChatGPT appNot documented by the vendor. Browser authorisation as the Ramp user, per Ramp's connect guide.Ramp doesn't document this, or whether Manage Access covers the ChatGPT app. ChatGPT Business/Enterprise: a workspace admin must allow the Ramp app before members can connect.

How do I connect it?

Use the ready-made Claude or ChatGPT connector, or add https://mcp.ramp.com/mcp as a custom MCP server, then authorise your Ramp account in the browser.

  1. Ramp admin first: decide who may use MCP in Company › Integrations › Ramp MCP › Manage Access.
  2. Open https://claude.com/connectors/ramp, click Add to Claude, sign in to Ramp and pick the business. The read-only description comes from the listing, and the listing shows ramp-mcp-remote.ramp.com, a different host from mcp.ramp.com. Ramp doesn't say which endpoint its own Claude card installs.
  3. Only if the read-only connector doesn't cover the need, add the full tool set as a custom connector: Customize › Connectors › Add custom connector, URL https://mcp.ramp.com/mcp. Try https://demo-mcp.ramp.com/mcp (sample data) first. This adds approval, card, fund and purchase tools; read the cautions first.
  4. To reconnect, disconnect and reconnect Ramp in Customize › Connectors.

Team/Enterprise: an Owner must add the connector before members can connect.

What should a finance team watch for?

Treat mcp.ramp.com as a spending tool. Ramp's tool list lets an agent approve items, raise limits, issue funds and make payments within the user's role.

  • Ramp says an agent's bill approval works exactly as in the web app, so a fully approved bill with payment details and a date set may proceed to payment automatically, depending on your payment-release settings. Check those settings before an approver connects.
  • Ramp says one-off fund issuance bypasses approval flows and needs the SPEND_ISSUE_SPEND_BYPASS_APPROVAL permission, so keep that permission off roles that connect MCP. It calls x402 wallet funding and withdrawal an "irreversible transfer"; other money tools include cancelling a reimbursement payment and requesting a transaction repayment. Limit who has MCP in Manage Access.
  • Ramp's two doc sites disagree: its developer guide says bill approvals are not yet available via MCP; its tool reference includes them. Check the live tool list in your client.
  • Memos, comments and invoice text are free text. An injected instruction in one could push the agent to approve, raise a limit or pay, so keep a person approving each action.
  • Responses stop at 100 rows. One connection covers one business; Ramp documents aliases like https://mcp.ramp.com/<business-identifier>/mcp for several.
  • Ramp's MCP pages don't cover retention or training; read Ramp's privacy policy and your AI provider's terms.

How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?

Read access suits spend questions and month-end checks; write tools suit drafting and triage that a person reviews before anything is approved or paid.

Inside a company

  • Ask for spend by department, vendor or card for the month without building an export.
  • List transactions missing receipts or coding; have the agent propose memo and category fixes in chat and apply them only after the cardholder confirms.
  • Draft bills from invoice details for the AP owner to review and submit.
  • Prepare the pending approval queue so the approver can decide in one sitting.

At an accounting firm

  • Before month-end, pull a client's uncoded or unsynced transactions and list what blocks the close.
  • Summarise vendor spend trends and new vendors for a client review meeting.
  • Have the agent propose GL coding in chat; apply it in Ramp only after the client's controller confirms.
  • Keep one connection per client business via Ramp's per-business URL aliases.

Whatever the use, keep a person approving anything that changes Ramp, moves money or touches your ledger.

FAQ

Is this official?

Yes. Ramp hosts the server at mcp.ramp.com and documents it on agents.ramp.com and docs.ramp.com. Ramp made the Claude directory listing, which is marked Anthropic verified.

Is it free?

Ramp doesn't document a separate charge or plan for MCP. You need a Ramp account and an AI client plan that allows connectors.

Does it change data in Ramp?

Through mcp.ramp.com, yes: it can approve items, edit transactions, change cards and limits, issue funds, submit bills and make purchases, within your Ramp role. Ramp says bill tools never schedule or release bill payments, though an approval can send a fully approved bill to payment. The Claude directory connector is listed as read-only.

Is my data used to train models?

Ramp's MCP docs don't say. Check Ramp's privacy policy and your AI provider's terms on training and retention before connecting.

Can my accountant use it on my behalf?

Ramp doesn't say. A connection acts as whoever authorises it, so an accountant with their own Ramp login is limited to their role, including any admin tools that role grants.
