What can an agent do with QuickBooks Payroll through MCP?
An agent can look up employees, payslip history, benefits, deductions, time-off rules and payroll readiness, and the Claude connector can add or update employee records. It can't run payroll; Intuit lists that as coming later.
Payroll is one part of the hosted Intuit QuickBooks connector, which has 74 tools on its Claude listing. The listing shows 24 names up front. The full list behind "Show all 74 tools" includes 23 payroll tools.
The 23 payroll tools
| Kind | Count | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Lookups | 19 | Employees, compensation, contracts, deductions, payslips, pay schedules, time off, the last payroll run and payroll readiness |
| Changes to employee records | 4 | qbo_payroll_create_employee, qbo_payroll_update_employee, qbo_payroll_save_employee_contract_details and qbo_payroll_assign_employee_work_location |
Running payroll
- No payroll tool on the list runs payroll or pays anyone.
- Intuit's July 2026 announcement describes the payroll tools as Q&A. It lists running payroll and compensation changes under "What's coming next".
- The Claude listing offers "read-only answers on payroll" and also says you can "add an employee or set base pay".
Confirmation before a change
- Intuit publishes no descriptions for these tools. So it doesn't document whether a change applies at once or which tool sets base pay.
- The listing ties its preview-and-confirmation promise to invoicing and payment-link actions.
- Intuit doesn't document a preview or confirmation step for employee or pay changes. The control you can rely on is Claude's own approval prompt for each tool call.
- Intuit says every action in the apps remains reviewable and human-verified, without saying how that works for payroll.
Can
- List who is on payroll and look up an employee's details (per Intuit)
- Review payslip history by employee, ID or date range (per Intuit)
- Show company-wide deductions, benefits, pay types, accrual rules and time-off settings (per Intuit)
- Check whether the company is ready to run payroll (per Intuit)
- Add an employee or set base pay (Claude connector, per the Claude listing), through 4 payroll write tools named on the listing; Intuit's announcement does not mention this
- Answer questions about QuickBooks Capital loans and peer lending benchmarks (per the Claude listing)
Cannot
- Run payroll or pay employees: no payroll tool on the Claude listing does this, and Intuit lists running payroll as a future action
- Manage compensation changes in general: listed by Intuit as coming later
- Import payroll data from other AI tools: listed by Intuit as coming later
- Serve customers outside the US (ChatGPT app, per Intuit)
What access does it get?
The connector acts as the Intuit user who signs in, on the company they choose. Intuit publishes no payroll scopes, and connecting grants all 74 tools.
| Where | Scopes and permissions (as documented) | Admin requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Claude connector (hosted) | Not documented by the vendor. Sign in with your Intuit account and pick the company. The listing marks sign-in as not required and offers uploading CSVs, PDFs or images, or pasting transactions, if you have no QuickBooks account; payroll lookups need a signed-in company. There is no payroll-only scope: connecting grants all 74 tools. | Intuit doesn't document which QuickBooks or payroll roles can connect. Claude Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds connectors and can set each tool to Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked for the whole organisation, per Anthropic. |
| ChatGPT plugin (hosted) | Not documented by the vendor. Sign in to QuickBooks Online from the app, per Intuit. | Intuit doesn't document role requirements. ChatGPT Business/Enterprise: a workspace admin controls which apps and plugins members can use, per OpenAI's help center. |
How do I connect it?
Connect the Intuit QuickBooks connector in Claude or the Intuit QuickBooks plugin in ChatGPT; payroll questions use the same connection, with no separate payroll setup.
- In Claude, open Customize › Connectors, find Intuit QuickBooks in the directory (https://claude.com/connectors/quickbooks) and click Connect.
- Sign in with your Intuit account and choose the QuickBooks company that runs payroll.
- Team/Enterprise Owners: open Customize › Connectors, select Intuit QuickBooks and, under Tool permissions, set write and delete tools (including the four payroll write tools) to Needs approval or Blocked.
- Ask a payroll question. If Claude proposes adding an employee or changing base pay, check the details before you approve the tool call; Intuit doesn't document a payroll preview.
Team/Enterprise: an Owner adds the connector first. Intuit's Claude help article returned 404 on 21 Oct 2026.
What should a finance team watch for?
Payroll data is personal and sensitive, and the Claude connector has tools that create and update employee records with no documented preview, so require approval on write tools.
- Conflicting sources: Intuit's announcement calls the payroll tools Q&A, while the Claude listing offers read-only payroll answers and also says you can add an employee or set base pay. Its full tool list includes 4 payroll write tools, so assume the write actions exist.
- No documented preview for pay changes: the Claude listing promises a preview and your confirmation for invoicing and payment-link actions. Intuit doesn't document one for adding employees or changing pay, so set those tools to Needs approval in Claude.
- Connecting for payroll grants all 74 tools, including qbo_sales_delete_invoice, qbo_sales_update_invoice, quickbooks-transaction-import and quickbooks-profile-info-update. Intuit documents no payroll-only scope. Ask IT to set write and delete tools to Needs approval or Blocked (a Team/Enterprise Owner setting in Claude).
- The Claude listing says "Anthropic does not control which tools developers make available", so the tool set, payroll writes included, can change. Recheck the tool list from time to time.
- Anyone who connects can ask about every employee's pay that their QuickBooks login can see. Intuit doesn't document payroll-specific permissions.
- Intuit doesn't document support for QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, and publishes no row or date-range limits for payslip lookups.
- Employee notes, memos and imported files are free text. An injected instruction could push the agent to add an employee or change base pay, so keep approval on and read each tool call before approving it.
- ChatGPT plugin: US QuickBooks Online customers only, per Intuit.
- Intuit says your data stays within Intuit systems and is not used to train foundation models. See Intuit's privacy statement and your AI provider's terms.
How could finance teams and accounting firms use it?
Most uses are questions and checks on payroll records; any change to an employee or their pay needs a person to approve the tool call.
Inside a company
- Check whether payroll is ready to run before the cut-off.
- Pull last period's payslips for one employee to answer a pay query.
- List benefits, deductions and time-off rules when preparing an accrual review.
- Prepare a new-hire record for an authorised person to check and approve in Claude (per the listing).
At an accounting firm
- Compare payslip totals for the period with payroll expense on the client's P&L before close.
- Compare payslip history across a date range to spot unusual changes.
- Confirm a client's accrual and time-off settings during year-end review.
Keep a person approving anything that changes an employee record or pay, and tie payroll figures back to QuickBooks reports before relying on them.
